Glacier, it's beautiful here, but it's also EXPENSIVE!!!
When I first moved here, this particular city was a well kept secret and that kept it affordable. Well, the secret got out and there isn't enough housing for everyone who wants to live here. 300 square foot studios are renting for $2000 a month before utilities, and no they are not luxury studios.
The worst we've had happen was when Texas lost all power in 2021. That was horrible. But after a couple of days everything was back to normal. Well, mostly.
Pip, it is scary, but tornadoes are much scarier. While the volcanic threat is very real and the nearest volcano has the highest possible danger rating, the last major eruption was more than a thousand years ago and the last lahar was a few hundred years ago. Compared to tornadoes, this area is quite safe. But when that volcano blows (and it can blow with just a few hours warning) it's going to be bad, bad, all the bad. But it might do nothing but look tall and majestic for another thousand years, too.
And my other issue is that the only saddles I like are to far for me to trial. But I don't want to drop 2k on a saddle and not be able to trial it first
But actually though I have my old western eq saddle for $1200 and then my current english saddle for $800. So in theroy I could buy a decent saddle as my next saddle. But neither of mine will sell and they have been on the market for ages
Pip, part of the problem in my city is that land is limited for purely geographic reasons. The city is right on the coast with a bay that opens to a large, inland sea with two major connections to the open ocean, so it's absolutely ideal for boats. All the richest people have yachts and even working class people have sailboats. Fishing is a big deal here, too.
But then the land rises quickly to steep foothills, so the city is long and narrow. The foothills are too steep for horses. A major volcanic mountain range lies immediately east of the hills. The volcanoes are active, so there is a constant threat of lahars (a fast moving slurry of mud and any debris caught in the path, including trees, cars, entire houses, and anything else) along all the flatter river banks. The volcano doesn't need a full on magmatic or phreatic eruption to trigger a lahar, which makes them even scarier. So wise people DO NOT keep horses in that path. So, no more horse jobs for me. T_T
Most of the riding in my area is English. There are couple places that teach western but they are kind of far and I can't drive. And I don't think my parents would want to drive that far either.
