Penta,
Sounds like it. Here's to hoping it stays that way! Don't want it spreading up there and affecting you guys, too

Mossy,
Parrots, primarily. But I spent a year around birds of prey and owls, so they aren't foreign to me!

Discharge from nasal and eyes looks mostly like goo. It can be clear, yellow, or even brown. Usually it clumps feathers together and overall just looks gross

It seems to be a bigger problem down south, than way up here.

What kind of birds do you specialize in? That's so cool!

What kind of distarge do they get if you don't mind me asking

I havent seen any sick birds and the Facebook groups I am a part of are pretty good about reporting stuff like bird flu

Penta,
If any ill bird does, lol. It's not restricted to wild birds by any means. If this particular strand of avian flu is in a domesticated bird, whether it be a chicken, waterfowl, or even a parrot- those dried particles are a risk upon taking to the air. Bird respiratory tracts are very sensitive and vulnerable. So much as a candle can kill them.

vent - not vet
lol

well, if a wild goose craps on the vet, I suppose that when dried, the tiny particles could be infectious to other critters.

That is a good idea, Hummer <3 Lots of people want to leave them up in hopes the ill bird will recover. Unfortunately, it spreads it faster. Taking it down altogether is never a bad plan

If I do find infected birds I better take it down for a few weeks rather than just wash it because the infected birds could come back.

According to my professor, it is airborne. As in, particles can be taken through ventilation, etc.

Outdoor bird feeders that are dishwasher safe can even just be put through the washer. Hot water and wildlife safe soap, yes. Rinse thoroughly, no soap should remain.

How would you recommend washing them? Dawn dish soap and warm water?
Pentagram Stables
08:02:49 Penta - KNNs
The CDC didn't say anything about it being an airborne - just that it spreads thru direct contact with body fluids from infected animals.

@Versa, I havent had time to refill the feeder lately anyways, but I will keep my eye out.

Hummer,
If you start finding ill birds around your feeder (swelling, gasping/wheezing, nasal and eye discharge, etc.) please consider washing them to keep your healthy flock safe <3

I have thought about whether or not I should take down my bird feeder, but I guess bird flu isnÂ’t a worry in my state right now.

Pines,
It's genuinely awful. Before all of the avian flu stuff started, eggs were already decently restricted. Now it's down the drain.

Wolf,
We can only farm eggs from free range chickens, so a lot of our chicken facilities are having to redo their chicken enclosures and cannot sell eggs.

Exactly Penta, that's a great comparison :) I've done it enough to know over here 😆
