| Dulcie, Without an image, it might not be able to be identified. The only brown birds with distinctive red markings I know of, are the northern flicker, house finch, and female cardinal. |

| It is some small brown bird, what really stands out to mee is that when it flies (or otherwise opens its wings) there is a reddish oval right in the middle of its back Im in the far western edge of the Midwest/east end of the west |

| Dulcie, I know of a few. :) Going to really depend on species, though. If it's just a general, small brown/black bird, there's almost no way. |
