The way it was explained to me, Quarter Horses have fast twitch muscles, which are powerful but tire quickly. Thoroughbreds don't, so they aren't as fast over short distances but they can hold their speed for a couple miles.
But I do live in a smaller town and we travel around to different tracks. So I've seen a lot. I once saw a Friesian in a race. It flabbergasted me. They aren't that fast, but they placed 7th or 8th I'm pretty sure. Again though, small town racing!
My first horse was a Arab/Saddlebred cross who was all of 14.3 hh, and he would be lengths ahead of my frien`ds 17hh Walker mare every time we raced. Of course he might have been running away from that super scary LEAF back there...
Aura, yep! And that's actually where their name comes from. So many Quarter Horses are faster than other breeds at distances of a Quarter Mile or less.
So true! I lived in rural Nevada, where cattle ranching was a major part of the local economy. Some of the cowboys took retired sprinters and retrained them for ranch work because they were great at chasing down cattle, too.
Yea I know! Sometimes they're underrated in racing and it just flabbergasts me. Most people think that Thoroughbreds are the best racing horses, they're just the most common.
B, that's cool! I used to live near a racetrack in a small town. I liked hanging out by the track to watch the horses train. Thoroughbreds and Quarter Horses were super popular. The Quarter Horse sprinters were so blistering fast!
Yea, my parents do the actually breeding though, I just pick and choose. We race in small towns, nothing major like the Kentucky Derby, so they aren't too popular.

Your horse may show 3 times per week. Shows run daily. Your horse and rider will gain valuable experience from showing. Select a discipline to show in, or scratch from tonight's show.
Showing in the special weekly shows doesn't count against your horse's weekly regular show count.
