Hummer, remind her of that.. that if he is difficult now while you are there to help.. will she be able to handle him on her own without you..

@SCF, thanks so much. I think you summarized it very well. I will definitely bring it up with my Mom again. Ultimately, the decision is hers though because she is the one paying for him and will be responsible for him when I move out in a few years.

Hummer, You have been debating this for quite a while now.. I think in your heart of hearts you know what the best solution is and that is to rehome. You sound like you are much more of a practical person than your mom. But keeping a dog just so you don't "break his heart" isn't a good reason. He is a dog.. he will love the next person who gives him treats and plays ball... you both are clearly miserable and stressed out over him. I would maybe check with your vets office and see if anyone would be interested in him. It doesn't make him a "bad dog" it just isn't the "right dog" for your family.. but his family IS out there!!

Why should the humans have to suffer to make the dog happy? When other humans would be happy to keep up with him? Sometimes pets just don't fit the situation.

@Gibbs; glad to help!

I have to agree with Solar - you must do what is best for the dog.

@Lucky, you bring up a very good point. We sure didn't research the breed that's for sure. We expected the grooming costs, but the $200/month prescription food and $200/month is putting a lot of strain on our family right now.

@Hummer

Is he tired out after you finish playing fetch? If he is, see if you could flip that schedule for a little while. Burning off a good amount of energy in the morning might help him focus on working his brain and training during the day

but it sounds like he might be better suited in a home thats prepared to meet his needs so i hope you find the perfect family for him

I don't know. I brought it up with my Mom once before and she said we are NOT rehoming him. So, I feel stuck.

well dogs can be a big financial commitment, i dont think its really fair to have gotten any dog, but especially a high energy breed that has grooming requirements and then be upset and rehome him when hes high energy and has grooming requirements that cost money

Is it more important to not "break his heart" than to rehome him to someone who can give him the attention he needs? Not that you don't, but clearly it's a lot for you to handle which isn't good for you guys either

@Solar, I usually try to walk him in the morning and then in the evening we go to a soccer field and play fetch.

I know rehoming him would break his heart, but $500/month for one dog is A LOT of money and both me and my Mom are so easily upset by his shenanigans.

Given the mix that he is, this feels like a long shot, but have you been able to reach out to your breeder for advice?

that playtime was on top of two walks a day. just walks aren't enough for high-energy breeds (believe me, we had/have Dalmatians)

training is good, but keeping up with it at home is the biggest thing. burning off energy with physical and mental activities is important
