Cardinal & Northern flicker can be ruled out I know we have some house finches in the area I wonder if the bird im describing is a female house finch |

But, she got kept over winter and fed up. Once it warmed up without risk of freezes. She got released to go find herself a man lol |

Dulcie, Without an image, it might not be able to be identified. The only brown birds with distinctive red markings I know of, are the northern flicker, house finch, and female cardinal. |

We'd had a really bad, dry summer and it was headed into winter. Poor thing was severely underweight and dehydrated |

but that tends to be the norm for wild animals out here lol. Mom had a 'pet' turtle for a few months a year or so lol |

It is some small brown bird, what really stands out to mee is that when it flies (or otherwise opens its wings) there is a reddish oval right in the middle of its back Im in the far western edge of the Midwest/east end of the west |
