What cute art ideas!

First of all, smudge in small circles. It looks like the coats of your horse are pulled down. Also,it looks as though you need to take more time cutting out the horse. The first horse still has some of the original background around the leg and the last horse looks like the cut out was rushed. Take your time and focus. Hard work pays off!

Also, try to blend the hooves into the ground on the first image. In the second image, the horse is missing it's back hooves! Try redrawing the hooves. There are many great tutorials on DeviantArt for redrawing hooves.

Another thing I thought I'd mention is that the top horse looks blue toned and the background is red toned. Try to color in some red and orange highlights on the horse to help it seem although it is actually in the background. The second image looks foggy in the background which means it probably isn't sunny out which contradicts the highlighting on your horse. Try to make the horse look as though it is actually in the fog as well.

The manes and tail look quite stiff as well. Mess around with some different blending options to make the mane and tail flow rather than be rigid. Making the eyes pop would also bring a nice touch to the art.

Other than that, it looks like your on the right track! :)

Lighting is key!!! and instead of blending the whole body just blend the face and the legs, and if you add white highlights it will make the horse pop.

These are a really great start and you really look like you're moving along splendidly in your art journey.

It seems like what you're stuggling with right now, which will really make a difference, is your pieces look rushed. I would suggest slowing down and not having a time frame in mind. Enjoy what you're doing.

I think i go back over my horses cutouts atleast 2 times. And if i notice a single pixel out of line, i go back again.

With manes and tails, i make sure to pull every strand, and do so with a small brush (3 pixels)
It takes FOREVER, but the result is a beautiful, lush, realistic mane / tail.

I think once you start focusing on crispness, you will really see a jump forward in your art. :)

These ideas are all great, you're off to a great start :)

I'd have to agree with Jello though in that your pieces are rushed. Patience is key, never rush through a piece just to get it done. It will really increase your works quality.

Also try using a smaller brush for hair. They seem very stringy and thick at the moment. Pull out each strand on its own, and keep in mind the way natural manes and tails flow.

Lighting and shadows are also crucial. If the lighting of the horse and BG don't match, it's impossible to sell the realistic aspect of the piece. Make sure shadows are cast in the correct directions, especially on the horse, and that areas not in direct sunlight on the horse are darker.

Hope this helps! :)
