As far as I can see, color matching is the biggest thing I see that could vastly improve your art Start playing with colorize, hues, brightness and contrast until you feel the horse is fitting better in the image. You can even do these steps for the background as well. You should try making really dramatic pieces, even if they look ridiculous, it will show you exactly how far you can take the effects in your manips

To adapt the horse to the background I do rhis
Duplicate the bg and make it a clipping mask that is attached to the horse Put it on soft light or overlay depending what suits best Blur this new layer until its just colours Adjust opactity Merge horse and new layer Play with colour opacity

I would read as many hair tutorials as you can manage. Manes and tails can make or break your art, and there's plenty of tutorials around to help you improve.

I would say to practice practice and practice some more with manes and tails. eyes/eye color/eye grow, that shows emotion, practice it. Match your colors and use tones that match the background.
