I need help with whitening. When I try to do a pattern on a horse, it looks pretty bad. I use desaturate, lighten, brighten, hue, dodge/burn; I've experimented and experimented, and I can't figure it out. I've looked up tutorials, but either I don't understand them, or else I'm just not following them correctly. Help! What am I doing wrong?
Here are my latest. I'm better than I was, but I look at others art, and mine looks terrible. DX

I use the lasso tool on pixlr and outline where I want the pattern, then I just light up the patterns with the brightness. Don't have any examples of it, but it does turn out pretty good, I will say. XD I don't know how Gimp works... can you do that? Unless you've tried it already.
I, personally, think that the second and last one are really good! The others aren't too bad as well. :)

Thanks Ethereal! That is what I do on GIMP. For some reason it just never looks right. It might be the shadowing? I don't know. Thanks for the encouragement!

It could be the shadowing or texture. Maybe add some noise to the horse? I dunno, I'm still quite new at this pattern thing myself. XD
