Hair/Roan Tips Needed

Photoshop CC '14 user here.

Looking for the more experienced graphic artists out there to help me out with this...

I have plenty of roan/hair brushes, but hate the roaning. It really takes away from muscle definition/detail. How do I prevent this? The only way I've really figured to make a roan horse is making a layer over the horse. (Which is why the detail gets covered up.)

Hair. My hair just always looks... tacky. Tips and tricks on how to get more natural looking hair is also very much so appreciated!
