I put a deposit on a Giant Schnauzer bitework puppy a few months back. The puppy was born on January 1st, there were 5 girls and 7 boys in the litter. We put a preference for a female but could end up with a male if the breeder finds that one of her male puppies would be better for our wants/needs once they are old enough to temperament test them.

We have a trainer that specializes in protection work Giant Schnauzers along with shepherds and mals who we will be working with!

Lineages and info about the puppy will be posted below. I'm documenting this journey here!

A little background info:

My boyfriend and I are moving onto an 100 acre homestead and business property where we will be living and working for a while. With as large as the property is and the number of nosy trespassers on the property, my boyfriend's parents who own the property and business (who live in a separate house on the other side of the property/orchard area) have said they want som form of security. They have several buildings, barns/stables, and of course their business (a wellness retreat) to protect. They agreed that having a bitework dog on property would be a good idea.

We have always wanted a bitework dog and extensively researched breeds for the past year to determine what breed would best suit us and if this was what we want. We landed on the Giant Schnauzer as a breed and we began researching breeders. We contacted several and wanted to find the most ethical breeder possbile as well as dogs that are as well bred as possible which is when we landed on the breeder we have found. I will not disclose this information just for my own privacy as well as the breeders BUT I will share lineages (with names crossed out), pictures, and updates on the puppy here.

The Breeder:

The breeder sources many of her dogs from Europe and flies over to collect and purchase these dogs from breeders that health test and temprament test all of their puppies. Puppies are at least 8 weeks old when they go home to their families and she asks to uphold a relationship with all families that the puppies go to. Additionally, she raises the puppies in her home so the dogs are exposed to a wide range of noises as well as she temprament tests her pups to make sure they go to the home that best suits them. She explained to me over an hour long phone call and several emails that she believes placing dogs in homes with personalities and character traits with people who are looking for those traits will ensure the puppy is happier and stays in that home for the duration of their lives. For example, if a family was looking for a dog best suited for scent work, she would place a puppy who uses their olfactory more in that home. Because of the relationship she likes to keep with the owners of her puppies, she will take back any puppy or dog that is in a bad situation or if the owner is no longer able to care for that dog for whatever reason.

Our puppy:

We have a female preference for our puppy but if the breeder finds another, male, pup would be suited better for our needs, that is the puppy we will take. Our puppy is 1 of 12 in her litter which is the last litter out of this breeder's female who has only been bred two times. In the litter, there are 7 boys and 5 girls. The puppy's sire is from Germany and the Dam is from Czech lineages but bred by the breeder. We cannot spay/neuter our puppy until it is at least 2 years old as per the contract but we hold breeding rights to the puppy. It's grandsire is a 3x IPO World Champion and the great grandsire is the only Giant Schanuzer to be titled in French Ring level 2. We plan on training our puppy for IPO.

Thank you! We thought it was so cute they were born on New Years! They were due on the 2nd but came a day early! We did so much research and digging on forums, YouTube, google, dog trainers, and the breeders. We just want the best for our dogs and wanted to get a puppy that we believe would be happiest with us and as healthy as possible.

Thank you! I actually owned a miniature schnauzer who passed away when I was 14. So when we were looking at bitework dogs about a year ago, we briefly talked about the giants because of my experience with the mini and her protective abilities. We don't completely take them off the list but we're looking more at Dutch Shepherds for a while. Months of research and discussions later and we went back to the giant schnauzer! We couldn't be more excited or confident in our decision!
