As some of you may know, I've had problems with my trainer for near on six months now. Recently, we've taken Zippy out of her care because she was being unprofessional and reckless (left the gate open when she went to catch him and he rushed the gate, and then texted my mom to tell her that "your horse ran me over" and that she was leaving him out all night with his halter and lead rope on... and then she forced us to pay for that day as training because she "handled him").
So, we've taken him off of training, and we're sending him to Cassi Soule, a dressage trainer in Southern Oregon we've previously worked with (and who works with the people who own Danny. She's very sweet and is just an incredible person) for a month or two, starting in about a week, so that Zippy can actually get the work he needs.
Since he's not in training and everyone at the barn refuses to handle him because he's "dangerous", we've been going down every day to bring Zippy in from the pasture and lunge him in the round pen or indoor arena. He seems super happy with this arrangement, which leads me to conclude that he wasn't getting enough work when he was supposedly in full training. He's been super sweet, comes up to us when we go to catch him, hasn't attempted to bite or kick (or rear) in weeks.
So. When we told my trainer that we were sending Zippy away for training, she insisted that there wasn't anything wrong with him, that she could "handle it", and that if we just put him on another drug or supplement that would fix his behavioral problems (respect issue, which is also rooted in boredom). We cannot fucking afford to keep him in full training, pay his board, and pay for expensive supplements for him to maybe get worked five times a week without communication and have him continue to get worse. That just doesn't make sense.
Which leads to the moving barns thing! We can't possibly bring Zippy back to the barn if he gets better because it would make her look bad, and she'd either continue to attempt to present him as an "unfixable" horse or let him do something stupid so she could claim that the training was useless. So, we're looking into another barn! It's slightly more expensive than the one we're at, they have nicer turnout, there are multiple trainers, and the lesson program is so much better than ours. My sister and I are going for an evaluation there later in the week, and I'm super excited that we're finally moving. We'll probably have to reduce the number of lessons we're taking because they're more expensive, but that's fine by me!
April 3rd was Zippy's birthday, and we got him a giant exercise ball, which he absolutely loves. Happy 10 years to my favorite partial pony, and I'm very excited to see what the future holds! :D

So happy for! Had similar experiences with my 12-year-old Thoroughbred Paint (love of my FRICKING LIFE!!!!!) where he was at a barn where he was in a stall 24/7 and was "high-spirited" "bites a lot" "trained poorly". My poor baby was just bored outta his MIND, was hurting, (his shoes wrecked his body, he's barefoot and winning everything now :) and was super anxious. Im glad you were able to recognize things like this.

Aww thank you! Do you have any pictures of your pony? He sounds cute. And also sounds like he and Zippy would get along; they have a lot in common (he's also part paint and barefoot xD)

I'm glad Zippy is going to get the training he deserves. I recently got a halflinger mare than was fancy broke once upon a time, but spent 9 years being almost untouchable out in a pasture with cows. I tried the slow and quiet way with her a couple of times, and she responded by acting spooky and crazy. The last 2 times I rode her, I used spurs and was way more aggressive, and it was like riding a completely different horse. She'd gotten away with being pushy for half her life, and now, she's surprised that there's a bit of a push back. I think she's going to be really cool and fun to work with now that she's stopped trying to spin out when I get on.

Aww, I love haflingers. Yeah, Zippy's been let get away with too much, but it's been manageable once we started working with him more.
