If you do go to the vet, I'd be concerned about stomatitis because it can pop up randomly. I experienced it quite a bit in clinic.

If a dental is needed, then the tartar can be removed and they'll likely to a treatment like how you get regular cleanings at the dentist. Then you can start a toothpaste for prevention of future tartar
