Oh God, you're lucky that the horse that ate the other horses tail didn't have to have surgery or something because of the hair it could get wrapped around its intestines and on top of that I'm surprised the horse that ate. The other horse's tail didn't get a beating from the one that the tail was being chewed off of Wow you're lucky you didn't have a vet bill either way.

We had a horse eat its pasturemates tail overnight because the scented shampoo in its tail. It was a rookie mistake on my part, but the horse was fine

Generally it wouldn't and technically shouldn't unless it was an individual issue with the horse. They account for the fact that horses are dumb LOL

I had a cremello mare who had a grudge against the shelter but was apeshit in a stall for too long. Sunscreen is an absolute MUST for any horse with pink skin for their wellbeing in my opinion.

Oh, that's news to me. I just hope that if the horse licks the sunscreen, it doesn't make them sick.

It is. Generally its a spray but you can get it in a jar to smear on more sensitive areas

Absolutely. Pink skin can and will burn.

I used to make a mix of sunscreen, swat, and Desitin to make it stick to muzzles

I didn't know horses could use sunscreen? Is that even a thing?

EW!
That is an unpleasant image for my mind!

I'm sure a lot of fly sprays are scrutinized over ingredients and how toxic they can be. Do you want to kill flies and give yourself cancer?

I like ultrashield. It works fairly well. In all honesty though I feel like none of the fly sprays work as well as they used to. I'm not sure if the ingredients changed or maybe flies became more resistant if thats possible? Last summer we used bronco and pulled a grey gelding from a pasture I initially thought was black because he was so covered in flies and im not exaggerating. wish i got a picture but it was so gross. The horses that tolerate it get fly masks, sheets, and boots though.

We've used Bronco the past few years (and beyond) and it just doesn't do the trick. We're just starting the season (100+ degree days) and the flies are Nasty!

I want to get something that isn't the worst thing to have around the horses, and me, but still able to be a repellant.

I've heard wonderful things about Ecovet for years - but also its very strong odor. We only have pipe fencing and spacious stalls, so not worried about the smell (or as concerned) - watched a video review where the horses in the barn had a sneezing fit from it.

Research shows that the UltraShield lineup has some decent products including essential oil based sprays.

We used the concentrated oil topical applications (like those used on dogs and cats) and I don't totally remember how it went. Pretty sure still tons of flies.

...yes all common practices to reduce the number of flies is used ie scoop poop frequently
