I for one was taught to always wear one no matter the horse... i mean yeah for showmanship i dont.... but thats like...i only ride my palomino and hes a sweetheart...

Well that's a loaded questions. Because it depends on where the light source is.

Highlights will always go on hair that's hitting light.

Shadows will always go under the hair, and in the wave of a hair, or hair that is being covered.

It's different for every horse and every piece.
