Not sure what my first first was but I learned mostly on quarter horses!

personally i think using a running martingale on a student who struggles with contact (which im guessing is what you mean by hands too light?) is quite weird, thats just kinda a bandaid for a riding issue

It works great! They cant buck without their spine straight, and you can circle them to give them something to think about. or even turn on the haunches or something.

Okay, children, letÂ’s talk about something else now. What was the breed of horse your first ride was on. For me, it was a Shetland pony

I know you're a beginner so I'm not blaming you at all but I am a bit concerned if this is what your trainer is recommending

So you are coming after me for leverage bits, when I just told you my hands are very light? What else?
Lucky Ranch
11:17:08 luhckeigh
That literally does not make sense queen😭 no such thing as hands too light especially with leverage bits

I have issues with my hands being too light. That is why they are there. My trainer would not do it for someone who is heavy handed. All people are evaluated when they ride the first time for stuff like that.

Rain, that's what I was taught to do, too. My instructor had me try a bunch of different horses at the barn, so I could get a feel for different strides and personalities. The big draft cross mare, Missy, was prone to bolting and crowhopping when she was feeling playful. So I learned real fast to turn her nose to the girth to keep control of her and keep us both safe. She responded quickly, too, and gave a "Aw! You're no fun!" sigh when I released the pressure. She was a good girl, but surprisingly high energy for a draft cross. Must be from the TB side of her family.

Not unsafe, but also not proper

I do agree with the curb+running martingale thing, they're meant for snaffles ;)

HOWEVER, if you ride with a light hand, it won't be an issue c:

I dont think anyone said anything about your horse being lame lets all take it back a step
Wraithcry Farm
11:14:57 Trigger 🐾
That is, in itself, not unsafe. And an agree to disagree, so with that I am moving on

If it unsafe, then I can point it out to my trainer, she is always welcome to something that is truly unsafe.
If it is something that you do not agree with, then we agree to disagree and move on. None of these horses are in pain, I can assure you that. Regular vet/chiro/farrier visits. Not a single one is allowed to be ridden/shown if they are not 100% sound.
