What about target training? Every time he voluntarily touches the syringe, he gets a treat or a scratch or whatever his favorite reward is. Then eventually he'll start seeking it out and keeping his head down for it. That might take more time, but it'll save you the headache in the long run and be something that sticks with him over the years that you own him
That is really rough. Usually molasses does the trick but if he's that bad, syringe is probably the answer. Though I do know there's a company that makes a 'bit' that you can put on like a normal bridle, and then syringe it in through that
Oh and another think that probably doesn't help is that he's already about 16.3hh and still growing, so when he puts his head up it's like trying to wrangle a giraffe 😭
Puck, yep, have tried mixing it with the applesauce and then into his feed and he'll sniff the bucket but won't touch it. I've gone away out of his eyeline and left him for a while to see if he'd eat it then but he'll just ignore it and go straight to his haynet. It probably doesn't help that he's not a particularly food motivated horse either
Angels, same. We had a horse in the stall next to one being treated for ulcers and every day after I gave the one horse the gastrogard, I'd let the second horse suck on the syringe and he was so happy. Absolute weirdo
Syringes of whatever his favourite thing is...Small ones...to get him used to having it..then give medication, and treat syringe after. Make it random etc so he never knows if he is getting the medicine or the treat.
