Lieut - mastitis is an infection of the mammary glands. Don't need to have had pups, just getting germs up in her teats is all it takes. Does she like to lay in puddles/mud ? That would be my guess.
Oh its heartbreaking, especially if you're bonded. I'm so sorry. It's especially awful when it's very sudden and unexpected news. You're doing the right thing for her, but that doesn't make it easy to say goodbye to a friend.
She has mastitis (and i dont know why since shes nevr=er had puppies.) And its gotten to the point where shes literally split open, so were calling a vet to have her put down.
