Trigger.. get a covered childs sand box and just put the lid on it when he is not using it... I believe there are others that you can get that don't look like they are for kids... but also if he is digging.. watch your fence line and you may want to run some rabbit wire at the bottom of the fence and bury it 8" to 12" So if he does dig at the fenceline, he cannot get out.. dunno how your property is or how big.. but a suggestion if it fits.

royal i love the silver, she's very regal looking. i think i'd call her something like 'silver lining' or something similar, as a play on her silver mane.
personally i think sand is the best for making a dig pit for dogs. easy to fill in the holes and "reset" it for them. as for the holes in your backyard, it would depend on what kind of soil you have back there i think.
