Lol my cat is more than unfazed. He's begging to go outside even though the neighbors have been shooting off fireworks all night.

Because some of our pups have gone into police/security 'jobs', they had to learn to ignore things like pipes banging together and gun shots.

A cap gun could help too if you have that in the US? Cheap and an easy thing to conceal, can also set it off randomly, or get someone to out of view

It is. The way I helped Nova with drums was just forced her to walk back and forth while they walked by us. It kept her doing something. I made her sit, kept her focus on me so she could realize it was only background noise. One thing doesn't work on every single dog. For Nova she needs to think about something else

Without being there an actually seeing whats happening, its hard to give advice.

But we use the whip as a training tool from a young age, for horses & Dogs. It helps. but not everyone has that luxury, i know

We were standing i. The backyard with the city fireworks show happening like literally 800 feet away and my dog didn't give a fuck. My aunts dog hid thougb

Some may always be a timid type though and may never some around to it.

As long as they can find a spot and hide/lay down and just chill, thats a good thing.

@Sting, I could try being excited. I just know my dog is ALREADY afraid so I feel like it is harder than starting from scratch.

Hummer, it still might be your body language without you realising it. You almost need to be over dramatically happy and energetic.
Timing is important too

And there goes my cat under my bed... neighbors are lighting off fireworks even though it is illegal in my neighborhood because we are so close to the mountains.

Nova is a very fearful dog. Shes better than she was. For example she's terrified of a broom or shovel falling and hitting the concrete floor. She panics the moment the butcher even drives by. Shes better than she used to be but I don't expect her to be perfect. As long as she can hide in the house she can handle fireworks and such without being drugged. To me that's what matters

Sting - you are so right about that.

@Sting, I just ignore the behavior and act normal, but that doesn't do anything.

I also desensitise my horses with the whip, so our dogs are fairly used to it anyway. It is a fantastic tool.

A huge thing is your reaction to it also...

We generally will crack the whip and then just get super excited and start throwing out treats, cheering and carrying on...soon they associate it with positivity and get excited about it.

Avoid things like "its okay" and petting them in a reassuring way..which sounds counter productive...but its all about body language. If you are happy and excited, they should feed off that...eventually

Athena - you could start out with 'poppers' and work your way up. That's what we've done.

Im crying right now. So IÂ’m currently sick with Covid in the guest room of my house and my spouse is running around my yard with a sparkler yelling “God has gifted me fire” just to make me laugh 😂

Freakin whole month of July is a firework fest in my state. We also celebrate our state founding on the July 24th which is just another reason for fireworks.
