Or they had prepaid for the lessons and really don't want to waste the money.

I think because they had already paid a lot for this camp. If I were running it I wouldn't have allowed her back.

That barn has also gone downhill so I'm honestly not surprised looking back at it.

Sandy, I think the only acceptable answer would be to teach her that acting that way isn't going to get her what she wants.

I wonder why the parents would want to bring her back after all that too.

Honestly, that kid shouldn't have been allowed to go back if it wasn't a special needs type incident. She would be a liability.

Beepers, they were but one of her parents had to stay the whole time.

Yeah, I think it depends on the kid, or if there is someone qualified to be working with a kid with special needs and horses. At this barn there was not though. It was just your average lesson barn. I don't think she had any mental issues though, she was just bratty. It wasn't the first time the police was called on her too apparently 😳

I hope they weren't allowed back there.

i think there should genuinely be an age minimum to be around horses. or at least mental maturity/ parents who have worked with horses. children are less domesticated than the horses

I thank God every day that this kid doesn't have her own horse. She just doesn't want to learn

Like I said, Beepers, she can't be trusted to do that correctly, she doesn't ride on anything more than a leadline (and that's just to keep parents happy that she's getting saddle time).

July that reminds me of the time I helped out at a horse camp one summer. One of the kids (she was like 9 or 10) was mad her riding time was over and didn't want to learn tacking. The barn was right by a super busy road and she bolted out into the road and just sat there.

Long story short, she was dragged back, bit another volunteer, and we had to call her parents and the police.

Same here. Thats a major issue we've found, which is why we incorporate so much of it into our lesson program. One of our lesson kids just got her own horse and started boarding it with us too (my friend went with her to look at the horse even), so they're super excited to start their training journey together. The mare is SOOO sweet; skittish, but sweet.

We have two lessons a week we do general upkeep lessons. Unfortunately, even if I teach her what to do, she gets pissy and doesn't do them the way that they need to be done.

the barn i used to ride at was right next to a very busy road. for some reason people in cars love yelling at horses. i'll never get it

Wander I wish I took lessons that incorporated that stuff. At most I learned how to tack and hose them off if needed. I didn't really learn anything else until I started volunteering at the barn I work at now.

Beepers, our lesson students help feed the herd and learn care tasks too, not just riding. It's always good to teach them what's involved in caring for a horse, as a lot of them, especially that age, just don't realise how different it can be from a dog or a cat. We have one gal who prefers it and the horsemanship part of her lesson is her favourite over the riding portion.

I could never work in a place like that. At least at my job I'm not in charge of the kids. That's for the instructors and non horse volunteers. I just work with the horses lol

Ah yes. The toddler feral phase haha.
I have been in a classroom with 18 1-2 year olds before. And all of them had special needs or were there for behavior
I prayed a lot that day.
