It might've been the air-tight gasket, if those aren't on right then it won't seal no matter what you do, The gasket is what creates the air-tight seal, without it a canister filter is going to have a long list of problems, Have you tried contacting Fluval about it Eve? It's weird that a Fluval product is doing that, My canister filter is not a Fluval and it didn't come exactly as advertised either. The locks on the lid are tricky to open and a workout to re-lock back into place, I'll share a picture of my canister filter tomorrow, the locks at the front don't unlock like they showed in the videos so I'm not amused about that.

I don't blame you, canister filters can be maddening.

I have 3 goldfish in a 20 gallon tank right now. I'm hoping to get some more. They are super easy to handle and take care of. I feed them 2 times a day (breakfast and dinner) and it lasts them the day and night! Surprisingly, I got them from a carnival game, and I thought they would be dead by now! My cousin took 2 home and one ate the other's tail off and killed it! xD

A 20 gallon tank is pretty small for Goldfish and OMG I have NEVER heard of a Goldfish eating the tail off of another Goldfish and killing it o.o I mean young Goldfish like to nip at each other's fins, I guess that Goldfish didn't get the memo that they are not Piranhas XD

Okay the drilling is over because I'm not keeping the canister filter I bought instead I have decided to get a different one since mine requires too many modifications that I'm simply not willing to do, I'll post pictures of my canister filter a little later, Though I have considered using it, cycling my tank and then upgrading to something else.

That's my canister filter, Oase Thermo Biomaster 250 the heater goes inside the canister filter. Here's the list of what I need to do in order to make it workable. 1: Drill holes throughout the pre-filter pipe (Cheese holes) Reduces noise. 2: Buy two 25 foot siphons and use their hoses (Cut to fit) for that air-tight fit. 3: Most annoying of all, Cut ammonia and Phosphate pad to fit due to curved media baskets. 4: And this is one of my many gripes with this canister filter, Stiff and nearly immovable 'locks' and primer. Sooo yeah, Not worth what I paid for the damn thing, Opening the lid is easy but closing and locking the butterfly clamps shut is like getting a workout you didn't ask for. Sorry for the rant, I am so ticked off with this filter.

Okay do not and I repeat do not get more gold fish and put them in a 20 gallon tank. The three you have will out grow your 20 gallon in no time. They are an extremely messy fish, and need a lot of flitration. If you plan on getting more gold fish you'll need at least 125 gallon tank to support them. Also remember these fish also can grow huge. As to your cousins gold fish, the one that canabilzed the other fish was probably bigger and stressed out at being in a small tank. They tend to be canabilistic toward each other and any other fish you put in with them. Brookfield Stables said: I have 3 goldfish in a 20 gallon tank right now. I'm hoping to get some more.
