I agree with Rosa. I work in a small riding school right now, we have 11 horses of our own and 7 boarded. Our horses only get hay and barley, and they healty and fit. The oldest one is 26 and still working. On the other side one boarded gelding get senior musli and oils and whatever still four leg lame, an other gelding get vitamins, biotin powder, herb mix and it's a wonder he doesn't collapse on his paddock.
As I see suppliments only good for the owner not the horse.

Some horses can't handle whole grains. I had my 3 year old on oats during winter (we had no ground feed and only fed rationed hay - and oats were cheap at the time) and he went ballistic, he was hot and aggressive towards my husband and I and we couldn't work out why so I tried a process of eliminating his feed one by one and found it was the oats! Put him back on pellets and he was back to himself in no time. I haven't tried him on barley yet, but since there is a grain shortage this year all bagged whole grains have almost doubled in price.

Also a feed isn't going to make an unsound horse sound again, neither will it make a sound horse unsound. The over feeding of any food can make a horse founder. My horses get a variety of different things and they all look fantastic and are very sound.

Honestly, i never understand why people feed mixed foods to their horses.
My horses get plain Oats and sometimes beetroot chips as a addition in winter including their hay ofcorse. In summer they get Beetroots and Sugar Beet tossed around their fields so they have something to look for.
I have been feeding my horses that for the past 20 years even my broodmares and with no issues atall, that was even fed to the show horses (Showjumping and Dressage) back in the day at the stable i rode. Neither do i feed any suppliments apart some homeopathic things when needed. Most of the stuff you find in the mixed foods they wouldnt even have or find in the wild. But then again my Horses are outside 24 hours in summer and in winter they only inside for extra feedings. My horses are only inside if they ill or about to birth.

Yes, what Summer said. I tried moving the old guy to a mix of oats and sweet feed, and he couldn't handle it. He did not digest it well. The grain and supplements I have him on have extensive research behind them, proving their worth and how they help the horse's gut as it is naturally.

And I completely disagree that supplements are for the owner, not the horse. When my old guy is on MSM, he is happy and comfortable. He plays and has fun, like he used to when he was younger. When every TSC around me ran out and he had to be off it until I could get more, two weeks, he was in pain and limping off of his old injuries and no new injuries. Get him back on MSM and he is happy again.

To be honest, even if it were all in my head, it's my money and my horse. If I want to pay for the supplements and they only give me peace of mind and they don't actually do anything for the horse, it's my choice. And I'd probably still do it, for my peace of mind. But I have seen the results and am pleased with them.
