so.
I have 2 horses, a mare and a gelding.
the mare has IAD (equine athsma) and we hav had it treated by a vet, and all is well with her and she isnt coughing much at all.
but recently, my gelding has started having coughing fits. we dont live in a very dusty enviroment and the barns are quite airy and not dusty. we soak the hay for at least 15 minutes, and use no-dust shavings. and yet he randomly has these coughing fits. Weve booked the vet, but she can't come until next week.
so if you have any advice or treatments we can do in the meantime, id love a little advice!
thank you <3

This is definitely something you would need the vet's evaluation for. There aren't any good "over the counter" type cough treatments for horse other than soaking hay, keeping them out of dusty environments, and removing potential allergens. Is there any chance this horse has been exposed to a disease? I.e. a new horse in the barn, recently went to a show, etc? If that's possible then he should be quarantined, but if he's already been coughing around your other horses then they've been exposed anyway.

thanks for the advice.
those are the only 2 horses ever to enter that barn so a disease wouldnt be possible, and we dont show either of them and they dont see other horses that much, just eachother. thanks for the help <3

Garlic powder can help with coughing, just in the meantime while you wait for a vet.

One of my friends mares became asthmatic during her pregnancy and the vets prescribed ventolin (yes, the one for humans!) given in a spacer that they use for little kids.

I don't know if you can get hold of it, but there's a brilliant supplement for coughing which I used for my gelding a few years ago called Airway Plus. Previously every year during autumn he would have horrible coughing fits and be put on antibiotics by the vet. I got him Airway Plus in the hopes to prevent his coughing and as a bonus he hasn't had that horrible cough since. The supplement comes in both a liquid and powder form

You're going to get a ton of different answers here, but my mare would consistantly cough during warmups and she was just tested posivite for PSSM2 and PSSM4. Since PSSM effects the muscles, it also effects cardiac muscles and causes respiratory distress. If there are any other symptoms you have noticed it might help narrow down the cause for your horse.

It could just be a cough, horses get them sometimes. Air Power by Finish Line
and
Cough Free (get the pellets)
work wonders.
