Is advancing in the training gauge early (like week 4/5) any indication of a good rating?

Depends. Geldings train faster. Single discipline trains faster than eventing.

What if they're not gelded and being trained in eventing?

Horses with a Premium or Elite training will probably go up one bar in week 4-6 ( mares and studs, trained in AD ) Superbs will take a little longer and Average or sub pars will take even longer, sometimes it will take them up to 12 weeks!
Geldings train up faster and SD trained horses train up a lot faster, too.
But you hardly can tell ratings from the speed, how fast horses get another training bar ;)

I am so depressed that I train and have my horses race......... I don't seem to directly affect my horse's levels. I am spending more money than winning. All 3 were wild horse captures. So now that I am bit ahead, do I keep my strongest one, set the other 2 free and just buy one even if I have to use real money to get a better contender? I am new to this game and feel lost, like there is other more info not in the guides that help to win.
