Hi everyone!
I'm new to HEE and I'm looking for any advice or tips you can lay on me to improve my overall breeding adventures. I love the rare colors, but I do value high ratings and overall strong horses more. If I can find a way to have colorful, strong, high-rated horses great, if not then I'll stick more to making stronger horses with good ratings.
I'm new so I obviously can't afford to buy WWWs or breed mares to the #1 leaderboard studs yet. However, I'm looking for ways to work my way up, and I'm just trying to figure out how to build a good foundation. And, to also be the most efficient with my money to spend it on the right things for my overall goals. What should I look for when buying horses? Is it best to buy mares and just breed to the leaderboard studs (even if I do have to start with the lower horses on that list)? Is it better to have full pairs myself instead of relying on the studs? A little of both or something else entirely? Is there any point to breeding PPPs at all?
How do you go about 'testing' your horses and when do you determine it's not going to work and part ways?
I realize a lot of the answers to these questions are probably opinion based, but I'm curious what works for other players. Any other advice you think would be helpful is greatly appreciated as well.
Before posting, I did search in the forum for similar posts or a breeding guide that addresses my questions, but I didn't find it. If there is one though feel free to point me in that direction.
Thanks!

The best way to make money is to show your horses. This, after all, is an Eventing game.

Yeah, just buy mares and breed to whatever leaderboard studs you can afford. There's not really any reason to buy studs. All the lower breed LBs are pretty cheap, and those boys are more likely to give good offspring. Besides, you won't be able to match every mare with a few bought studs. Also, if you continue breeding back to the same boy or few boys you can eventually weaken your lines.

As far as buying mares, the most important things to look for are fairly even strengths and weaknesses and decent production. A mare can have a nice rating, but if she's very weak in one trait, it can be really difficult to get good offspring out of her. For instance this mare is the best mare I've bred rating wise, but she's very weak in Scp, so she's not producing. You can also have mares with nice ratings and training who just never give nice offspring. It'd be a much better use of your ebs to buy an EEE with even training who's produced a few EEE+ foals than a WWE like my girl.

PPP mares can be useful if you're breeding a harder breed like KNN or are trying to breed up a certain color, otherwise they're probably not worth your time. PPP studs aren't worth anything, but they make good geldings.

Testing is really only something players say of studs who may have LB potential. In that case, they're talking about the ten first foals he needs to have before he's ranked. For that, you'd just want ten decently matching mares, though if you're starting without buying WWWs or breeding to top boys it'll probably be a while before you have any boys worth testing.

As far as what mares to keep once you start breeding, that really depends where you start and what your exact goals are. Ideally you should start producing horses with stronger training and then could start selling off your starting stock. You would also get rid of offspring with weaker training. What that would look like depends where you start. My advice on buying is definitely a basis for culling too. Mares with extreme weaknesses or bad production (producing at or above their rating less than half the time) probably won't be worth keeping. Of course, if you're breeding for color too, you might keep some of these around if they have good color in the hopes that you get lucky.
