Sooo I'd like to start learning how to evaluate the training and strength of a horse. And I have just the perfect candidates to help me with it.

I have these two boys, they are almost identical both appearance and pedigree. But their training is very different.

I know that as of now it's early to tell is how strong or weak they are, but I'm just really curious.
With their current training, which horse would you have more hopes for?

The first one. I've seen 3/6 wk 4/8 colts hit the LBs, but never a foal who is down two week 5. Honestly, you're safer putting your hopes on Thur first guy, and gelding the second one.

I would only have hopes for the first colt, Yoshitsune.
All colts that are down 1 or more in week 5 are immediately gelded in my ISH/SH program.

Week four is actually not as important in AD horses. Being all up at week 5 and then week 9 are more important in my opinion. I like to look at weeks 8 thru 16 as well. AD horses are about balance, one bad area can be a killer.

I would geld the second colt without hesitation,

Hmm so this means that if a horse is not up in all week 5 and 9 then it's most probably not a keeper?
I'm breeding ISH and TB and these two are breeds with high standards for good horses, no room for weaknesses x)

Mmmmmmm... I'm generally going to have more hopes for a 4/6 over a 3/6 HOWEVER in this case having TWO down wk5 I would for sure have more hopes for the 3/6. I have an ABLB boy on my main who was 3/6 wk4.

As far as wk9 goes having one down wk9 isn't bad. Once again my ablb boy was down one wk9. By the time you get to wk8/9 there's also a leveling factor. In some, very rare, cases of a horse leveling wk7. If your horse doesn't LEVEL all by wk9 I wouldn't have any faith in them either. Two levels wk8 can be fairly decent, shoot even 1 level wk8 can come out ok. But as far as these two go just looking at the training you have now hands down your 3/6 boy

I look at it as week 5/9 are normal. So anything that goes up sooner week 4/8 are strengths, and anything that goes up later week 6/10 are weaknesses. I normally stop tracking training at week 10 but there are plenty of people who prefer to track untill week 15 or more to get a better understanding of strengths/weaknesses

But yes I would think the first boy is stronger. Having a weakness means it's harder to match because you have to find a horse that is strong enough to make up for that weakness. All up week 5 and 9 (supposedly) means the horse doesn't have any major weaknesses and will (supposedly) throw stronger foals. At least with my horses, unless they are good producers despite their training, I sell if they are down more than 1 week 5 or 9

Just going to reiterate that week 4 does not mean much (I've had ABLB horses with as little as 1 trait up week 4--and many with only 2 or 3). I allow up to 1 down week 5 and 9. As mentioned, you can still get ABLB if they're not all up come those weeks. That's fine. Weeks 7-9 are more indicative of strength than weeks 4-5 but typically weeks 11-13 are where you really see a horse's potential.
So for me, the first colt is definitely the one with more potential and I would geld the second. If I wouldn't use a horse in my own breeding program, I don't personally sell.
