Hi, random passerby here... I have been secretly stalking some HEE artists, you being one of them. I'm trying to learn and improve and hair is one of the thing that gets me, but overall, every little thing or every tip that you could give would be really helpful. I have zero clue/talent when it comes to drawing and right now I'm trying to sit down, relax and see how I could improve somehow. While I love seeing the finished pieces (because honestly is very much jaw drop), I learn more from a WIP. There's so much in the process than what a finished piece can tell.

Thank you for the input, and I wish you luck on your drawing journey as well! This current artist rumble round plus a second contest with the same end date are both kicking me, but I'll try to compile some layer-by-layer process gifs or something like that afterward. I'm also tentatively planning on writing in my HEE blog about art tips & rants. If anyone's interested, I've got 2 WIPs for the Luminara bio I made for Fleur here (they just showcase before + after painting hair, all before I did the over-body paint): https://lensdump.com/a/luminara-wips.isQN0 I'm presently working on a contest entry, WIP here: https://i.lensdump.com/i/j6xgHx.png Just a bit of background: my process for manips involves first laying out the background + colors, before starting on the horses. I only do basic color changes initially, then apply simple shadows (using the multiply blend mode), lighting (with the dodge blend mode), before painting over the body. Fun tip: I overzealously color-pick from the background and will paint over the horse with a soft airbrush using that nearby background color, especially for reflected light and the ambient light for shadows. I usually try to paint hair before body, but in this case, I wanted to nail down the critical paint patterns (plus I kind of forgot to....). I'm currently working on the horse on the viewer's left, with shadow/lighting/some painting done. The one on the right is virtually untouched.
