hey guys!
so ive been thinking for a while about getting a pet frog because they are one of my favourite animals.
and obviously i could just catch one from out river and put it in a tank but one it would be hard for the frog to adapt to that and two they can carry diseases.
-
so im wondering if you guys can give me any info on frogs as pets, and how it is to keep them happy.
-
i want to get a loive one online but cant seem to find anywhere that ships to portugal, so if you know of any EU shipping amphibian websites, please comment <3
thanks!

As someone who has worked with a bunch of exotic animals, please don't adopt any of the wild frogs. Aside from diseases- it will likely shorten their lifespan due to stress. They aren't used to us. Lol
.
I'd also recommend avoiding a lot of the bigger, very well known pet stores. Sometimes their care isn't good, and the animals they sell are not very healthy. They're built to provide animal supplies, not the animals themselves.
.
Try to get to know the seller at least a little bit if you go the online route. Do they breed the frogs? What kind of care do they recommend/do themselves? How much information do they know about the species as a whole? I did the same thing for something as simple as my geckos. It was worth it for healthy pets.
.
Care will highly depend on the species. A lot of the more popular ones (widely chosen due to bright colours) have a pretty comfortable amount of care, nothing too difficult, so long as you keep up with it. We had a glass frog once and the humidity was a pretty big pain. Again, depends on the species.
.
I can't say I've ever really seen anybody build a connection with their frog. They are happy so long as their environment is comfortable, and they are free of stress. Lots of hides. Some of them are very shy. Handling isn't recommended for most species, as they can be fragile- and the oils on your skin can be unhealthy to them.

I should add that glass frogs are rarely kept as pets, and certain exotic frogs will require licenses depending on where you live. Everyone I work with has the required licensing. It IS a little exotic store with very experienced people, and proper care is very highly valued. These animals do not go to homes unless the seller is very sure that the new owner has the necessary knowledge and environment ready.

Definitely start researching now. I decided I wanted a frog awhile ago and dove into research and realized very quickly that it would not be the most suitable pet for me. Better to find that out now than after you have the animal.

Seconding Versailles about capturing wild frogs. It's not fair to them, you have no idea how old they'll be or what their past medical history is, and the stress shortens their lifespan significantly.
Try to see if there's a local community for frogs!

I'm a toad owner, not a frog owner, but obviously there are some similarities ;) so I know some stuff. I'm sure there are species that are more beginner-friendly and some that are not so much, but one of the main things with any frogs that you will have to worry about is that they have to keep their skin moist. A frog can dessicate easily if their tank isn't kept moist enough, and they actually breathe to a degree through their skin. You'll need a dechlorinator to make the water safe for the frog. Another is food. Frogs (and toads!) have to eat live food, they will not take dead prey. Are you ok with feeding live insects, and providing enough for them to eat? Frogs and toads are pigs and can eat quite a lot. they also need a calcium source, so you'll need to either gutload the insects with foods that contain calcium or dust the insects with calcium powder before feeding. are you ok with a pet that you probably shouldn't really handle often? Frogs have delicate skin and due to it's nature you have to make sure not to have anything on your hands that it will absorb, like lotions or hand sanitizer or soap, before handling. Also be aware some frogs have teeth! Not fangs, but something like a Pacman frog can nip you. And if you have other pets like cats or dogs, please be aware that there are some frog/toad species out there that secrete poison from their glands that is strong enough to kill a dog or cat should the toad get out (cane/marine toads come to mind). My best advice is pick a species you like, and do a lot of research first.
I'm not trying to discourage you, and I love my toads. I find them very rewarding to keep and once you do the research and get the hang of it I find them pretty easy to care for. They are a very rewarding pet even if they are pretty much for observation only (I do complete a quick check of their bodies every few days to make sure their skin and toes look healthy). If you decide to proceed, even though I said they can bite I'd look into Pacman frogs. They come in a lot of pretty colors, are pretty readily available in pet stores or through private breeders, grow to a good size, and are pretty beginner-friendly. They are solitary though, so only one per tank/terrarium.
