Student loans are great. I'm recertifying my plans and it's basically "pay 2k a month for 10 years and end up paying 600k despite you're initial loan amount being 200k" or pay $600 a month and get the loans discharged when I'm nearly 70.

Gabby, I also keep the majority of my show geldings. When they have lower ratings or aren't showing well I just put them up for sale and keep showing them.

Well the good thing is I only really have my credit card. I put all my money on it. And most vendors take cash, also my credit card is set up to where you can't send money or take out cash. So if I want to buy something I have to plan ahead of time and save for it

Do you guys cull show geldings that are level 2 and in the negatives for profit?

Oof lol. I would be willing to drive for expos just to look too, but not in Atlanta xD Atlanta is way too crazy
Dayseeker
12:31:06 Ly/Lyra
That's fair. We will drive pretty far for most expos even if we don't buy anything, but since the twins are getting bigger and their new hobby is snatching shit off of tables, we try not to go now unless I have money and space. I have an empty tank right now but no monies lol
Angels angels
12:29:22 [1k+ brindles] Angel
I mean there are ones in Atlanta at least once a month but I have to have the money and space to come home with something for it to be worth the drive lol

Im lucky enough where I live we get tons of expos not horribly far. Closest is about 25ish mins away
Angels angels
12:26:22 [1k+ brindles] Angel
Yeah, majority of the expos in my area are in Atlanta or Chattanooga which are both an hour away. Sometime there are smaller ones a little closer but not often, and they are so small lol

@Angel
Yeah which sucks in my case since expos are often hours away XD
Though I might try ordering a Beardie if I cant find one near me.
After Ozzy lives the last of his days of course

Understandable Green. But sometimes you have to do what you have to do. You can't always find what you want at the expos and sometimes they are a lot cheaper online
Dayseeker
12:21:13 Ly/Lyra
I love expos too. There are none near me for quite awhile though unfortunately. One in August but it's out in Havre De Grace which isn't the worst. PA to that part of Maryland is roughly 1hr 1/2

Life has been a rollercoaster of opportunity lately :D
-
The GM's husband of the company that I work for owns a coffee company and is opening up a coffee shop where I live - specifically only about a 5 minute walk from my house, which is super convenient!
Long story short, he offered me a job as a part-time barista and I absolutely took it. He knows me from my current job and is familiar with my work ethic and personality, and he also knows that I have no barista experience. He's more than happy to train me though and go with a learn-as-you-work kind of scenario.
I have experience in hospitality but this is all new to me, I'm super excited to give something new a try! As mentioned before, it will be a part-time position and very chilled as the town where I live is out in the sticks lol so not too busy.
So are there any baristas or even those who work in similar positions who have any advice or tricks of the trade to offer? I want to gain some new insight as well as feel adequately prepared :)
-
Little update 30/6/26 - I met my team today and got a better idea of what is expected of me from my boss. I also met my fellow coworkerwho I will be covering shifts for when she needs me to and she is soooo lovely! I'm looking forward to beginning my training next week :)
-
Update 16/7/26 - I have my first official day of work tomorrow! I will be working with the other barista for the next few days as I ease in from training.

A lot of the job comes with memorization of the menu and customer service. It'll take time to get comfortable with making drinks, steaming the milk correctly, and sequencing etc. I'd say the biggest thing is giving yourself grace while learning, and have fun. I work at a chain coffee shop so my experience might be a little different from what you'll have, but I do enjoy it a lot and hopefully you will too :)

Great opportunity. Customer service is mostly fun and mostly very rewarding. Especially the gossip. So take it all in but be very careful what you pass back out, the good news (babies and getting jobs and kids doing well) are great. But take care not to pass on real bad stuff (someone going to prison, divorces). Let the bad news spread from the families themselves.
The skills of timeing, managing your tables and your ingredients will stand you in good stead all your life. Like Lorelei says above.
Every day I use my long time ago waitressing skills in normal life.

Thank you, it's great to hear from someone else in a similar position! Just like you said I think it will definitely take time to settle into a rythm and learn the ins and outs. I'll definitely keep your advice in mind :)

Yes I think it will be very beneficial to have those skills and experience under my belt! I'll definitely keep this in mind and be careful what I spill the beans on ;)

Ooo good luck! I enjoy working in hospitality overall! It took TIME for me to steam milk properly - to not waste milk I was shown to do it with water and dash of dishwashing liquid lmao.

Thank you! Steaming milk is definitely something I haven't done before so I may have to utilise that 🤣

Have so much fun! I am not a barista and probably never will be, but I'm typing this while I'm sitting in the Starbucks I hang out in to write and the people are so sweet and so friendly and it's a great way to make connections with your community!
