Are there any hints and tips for figuring out what helmet size/shape your head is? I'm in desperate need of a new helmet. I went to the local tack shop that supports all the local shows and does so much for the equestrian community. Well, their customer service sucks just a tad. And their prices are for the hoity toity crowd. I felt dismissed and less than - I had some money ready to spend and was relegated to the schooling low end of the collection. I need a proper fitting helmet that's current and up to code. I know that MIPS adds like $100 to the price and obviously each brand has a low, medium, high or $$$$$ helmets. My current helmet is a IRH Elite EQ, navy with suede covering. I like that it looks nice, isn't a recognizable schooler helmet (like an Ovation or Troxel) and could go into the show ring. I used to ride in a OneK and that was my 'goal' helmet to get - but with so many on the market, and the recent safety studies, I'm wondering what direction to go and how to get there. Price point - $400 or less MIPS Nice professional look for training & local shows Online Reliable Tack Store Advice on sizing Riding: Dressage, Hacking, Low Hunters USA Edited at March 6, 2026 01:20 AM by Boulder Creek

Any information on the Trauma Void helmets? It looks like one of the better options according to the recent Virginia Tech Helmet Study. Any opinions on how it looks - is it instantly recognized as a 'schooler'? Same question with the TuffRider. One K scored soo low. Edited at March 13, 2026 02:17 AM by Boulder Creek

Trauma Void does look the best out of some the options. Look at Trauma Void EQ3 MIPS specifically. They are known to fit more of a round head shape. I, myself have a Capriole Air Flow helmet. Its rating is currently a VGI. I've had it about 3? years. Bought it for $85 dollers i think

Thanks! I really like the fit of my current helmet - need to see what shape and size it is, as I have no idea. Arro helmets have been popping up too. Not sure about the look or cost. They have a weird Helmet Guard accessory. I have so many tabs open about helmets alone.

looks to me that trauma void and champion helmets are very highly rated! i believe both have MIPS and are reasonably priced and even the lower priced models are still very safe! i don't think either are considered schooling helmets. i personally have a kask helmet because i do big hunters and i highly recommend but it was super expensive.

I've had Tipperary helmets for the past 6 years at least, and I absolutely adore mine! They have several MIPS styles, are quite affordable as far as helmets go (which is why it's the brand I immediately went for when I bought a new one last year!), are comfortable, and look nice to show in the rated hunters!

I appreciate the feedback! Thank you. I've been going over data for days now trying to figure out the 'best' option. The Trauma Void Pardus seems to be a good option for me - it has Mips, it scored well on the Study, it has anecdotes to support it and is the shape closest to my current helmet. It does have a dial system to help with fit and it looks discreet. I wish the local tack shops had options to see the helmets in person but researching online has shown they all carry a small selection of brands and none in the models I'm looking into. I also missed the big horse shows with tack booths. Now it's finding the 'best' website to purchase from with a good return policy - any discount codes?
