My sister is taking care of a beautiful 6 month old half Friesian Colt Lottie while he is being weaned. His mother went dry and didn't produce milk I think just a month or so after he was born. They gave him milk replacements and vitamins but he's always seemed low on nutrition and had diarrhea. His owner had taken him to a few different vets and tried different meds/probiotics and such. But nothing ever helped.

My sister mentioned that the owner was very impatient with the different medicines and if they didn't work in a few days she would switch to another and then another. So my sister is giving him a break from all that to clean out his system. Now Lottie grazes and gets a portion of Purina Equine Junior feed each day, but his stool is still inconsistent.

This picture is from this morning he was constipated. His stool looks like it's stopped up and we have to dig it out of him. A few days before this he had runny diarrhea but we haven't change his diet at all. It goes back and forth between diarrhea and constipation within a few days. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated

I have a question, what do you guys feed your horses and what types of trees/plants do you guys have around that he might could get a hold of. Also, what type of medicine/probiotics are you guys using?

I do not think it is because of any trees/plants because none of our other horses have this problem. Also, he has been at 2 separate locations and hasn't improved in either. As far as medicines I don't know exactly what his owner has tried but he isn't taking any currently. He only grazes and eats Purina Equine Junior feed every day.

He's been to vets before. I was hoping someone would know a home remedy or something that has helped with this situation before

Hm... honestly i'm studying to become a vet soon. And this is a little confusing and hard to figure out. If he doesn't improve in the next day call a vet again. I feel like he may have been on too much medication and it's all trying to get out of his system. Therefore, I would have a vet check on him and figure on from there.

Yeah... there isn't really much you can figure out from this unless you see it in person. Sorry, I hope he gets better soon!

Maybe it's parasites, I know worms can do that so who knows. Animals are funny that way.

I'll have to ask if he's been wormed before, thanks!
