that's good you can afford it, but still that's a sticker shock. I make 90k and that'd hurt each month

On the other hand, it sounds like there's the potential for loan amounts to actually go down instead of just fighting the compounding interest?

The owner might be putting him up cause of his problem usually if they do it might be serious or not wanting to spent money so you should be aware of that. Also check with the owner and ask the owner to let him trot walk and maybe a canter too to check for problems for stiffness or anything like that

These days no one wants to spent money and want to get rid of them by putting them up for cheap so most horses that are that cheap have problems like theeth hooves legs and back too those are the most common to put them up but they might to get rid of them for another reason but they might also put him up for lack of money to pay for the treatment

If he's for sale for 500 and in good health etc. then I would bet that he IS lame. Get a vet check before you buy, it will save you in the long run.

Even if you did buy him and he hardly costed you anything,Vet bills are a HUGE blow if something serious is up.Id say that you need to ask the owners, get a vet to check him over and one of my key intentions before buying any horse is to see their gaits as it can show any obvious problems majority of the time.
Good Luck, and remember if it seems too good to be true, sorry but majority of the time it is!

Vet check. Don't buy anything unsound, despite how cheap it is it'll just cost you in the long run.
You're probably better spending an extra couple hundred and getting something that's sound.

As said above, vet check! Don't buy a lemon, that $500 horse might end up costing you thousands, possibly tens of thousands!
