A client horse of mine tore his meniscus. The only thing that has really helped was arthramid injections - he gained a lot more comfort and range of motion in the field.

that said, he is ultimately retired given the inability to really rehab that injury. A friend of mine's horse had the surgery, only for them to open him up and realize they weren't able to successfully stitch it, which is apparently not uncommon for this surgery. Ugh. Its wonderful that you're willing to support him through a quiet life. ❤️
My older gelding doesn't have a stifle injury, but they are a point of discomfort. We managed it through his showing career with various injectable biologics and corrective shoeing. I tried to pull the shoes when he shifted to partially retired, since he also struggled to hold his hind feet up, and he got way worse. He gets dorm while shoeing now and is able to hold himself up and farrier has no issues. Just a thought!

Thank you! I've heard good things about arthramid and was actually thinking about it the other day. I will definetly talk to his farrier when I get a chance. Rehab was basically the same for my horse (it was ineffective) and my horse was going crazy on stall rest to the point where he had to be sedated 3x a day. It's definetly been rough but I want to give him the best life he can have for as long as he holds up to it. I wonder if hoof boots might be helpful? He used to be in rocker toe hind shoes and normal fronts, we pulled all 4 shoes in August and he did fine up until the winter, but it makes sense that it's gotten worse now. I really appreciate your ideas & input!

If you stick with the MSM, I'd recommend adding chondroitin and glucosamine. MSM by itself is helpful, but the triple combo can make a nice difference.

I don't know if this is feasible since you're boarding him, but you could also try a topical medication like Bigeloil. It's a good linament that can be massaged in. I recommend using gloves since it can make the skin between your fingers hot-tingly...Personal experience lol.

Otherwise, it sounds like you're already doing everything you can.

Thank you! Will definetly work on getting a more complete supplement/adding chondroitin and glucosamine 🙂 I can definetly bring topical meds with me whenever I go see him, even though it's not frequent because he's pretty far away. We did put Voltarin gel (same thing as surpass) on his stifle twice daily throughout rehab and that seemed to help until his skin started getting irritated due to it.
