Winter Riding Glove Recommendations? December 13, 2020 10:53 AM

Hello all!
Could I get some winter riding glove recommendations? I'd like to find some fingered gloves (as opposed to mittens) that aren't chunky around my fingers and relatively inexspensive, preferably under $35 USD. I've been looking around, but the main articles I see are for professional recommendations, which all recommend $40+ gloves.
The gloves don't need to be made for equestrians specifically, they just need to have the grip on the last two fingers, palm, and thumb so the reins won't slip from my hands.

I live in the Nothern NY area near Lake Erie, so needless to say; winters get pretty cold around here. So far this winter has been pretty mild and rainy (yay global warming :T) , but that will change by Jan/Feb/March. Winters here can regularly average between 20F and -10F, not including wind chill. I won't be taking lessons in under 10F, as per the barn rules.

As far as my riding "skills" go, I currently consider myself a beginner and am finally getting into the saddle after a few years' break (you can read about my riding adventures here!) so I don't want to be spending too much money on winter riding gloves just yet.

On a side note, I've been eyeing one of the professional recommended pairs of leather gloves that are both thin and supposedly warm. Anyone know how well leather riding gloves work in the winter? And is getting equestrian-specific riding gloves even worth it? As someone who does not show just yet, it seems like I could use non equestrian specific clothing that is significantly cheaper than everything at my local Dover rather than actual equestrian brand clothing.

Thank you all so much for the help!

Hello! I used my older brothers rugby gloves :) they are warm, grippy and great for riding! I live in the UK so I have no idea where to suggest you buy them, but my brother got his in sports direct (maybe there is an American equivalent?) I love them! They are great quality and very grippy and warm! I hope this helps <3
this is what they look like:

I use these when it's cold. I find them warm, however I live in Arizona so it is a little different.

I'd check out Horse&Hounds reviews on gloves and you should find some really good info on quality gloves that have mostly affordable pricing.

I have a pair of Horze Equestrian winter riding gloves and they're amazing! They aren't very thick but they keep my hands super super warm. Plus, they're very cheap and last forever!
