AI writing or human writing? You decide February 26, 2026 11:02 AM

Since the topic of AI writing came up in chat, I was curious on how many people would be able to determine what's AI and what's human. Yeah, some of the models are obvious in their little tells. What about when they're not?

Here's two writing examples. Vote on which you think is the AI.

Sample #1 Riley

The raven on the roof made three full circuits of the ridge line before stopping to examine the chimney stack with intense personal interest.

Riley watched it for a moment, then looked back at the hooded crow on the lower branch.

"Many opinions," he said. "About me, specifically. Or just in general."

He turned the mug slowly in both hands. The morning cold had settled into his bad hip and he shifted his weight in the chair without drawing attention to it.

The crow's head tilted the other direction. That sideways eye, assessing.

He hadn't moved to shoo any of them off. Hadn't made the kind of large gestures that would scatter a normal flock. Partly because he suspected it wouldn't work.

Sample #2 Kit

"Yeah, they do. I think they're basically one of the few natural predators that moose have. It sounds absurd, but it's entirely legit." Yes, Kit liked weird animal facts and the fact that someone seemed to share in this was an absolute blast for him. However, they soon started walking and his vision steadily adjusted to the lower light. Then, when he spotted the sharks, there might have been a low noise that was a sound of pure glee.

He took the seat where he could watch them swim around. Then, when Ghost sat down next to him, Kit looked over at the other man. "It's pretty wild at how the blue print for sharks has pretty much stayed the same for millions of years. But why change when something's effective? Permian time period was wild though. Nature was snorting the good stuff."

Poll Question: Which is AI? YOU DECIDE!
Total Votes: 39
Riley : 2667%
Kit : 615%
Both AI : 13%
Both Human : 615%

You have cast your vote.

Something about the second one just feels like it has more human personality behind it, and I cant quite put my finger on what it is. It might be that we get a clearer sense of the setting sooner in the second one. "Nature was snorting the good stuff" definitely feels more human too lol

I'm going to assume part 2 is organically written because blueprint is one word.

The second one had so many back-to-back introductory clause sentences.

I would agree with Ven that Kit is the human one since blueprint is misspelled. If there's one thing I know about AI - and admittedly I don't know much - it's that AI tends to be pretty spot-on with spelling.

I think it's number 1 Riley because it's to perfect, and even I can't write perfect, like just yesterday I was writing my story on the laptop and I misspelled. Horrible, Grim, Calm, Outta, One and If, don't ask me how.

I wanted to say Riley but "However, they soon started walking and his vision steadily adjusted to the lower light. Then, when he spotted the sharks, there might have been a low noise that was a sound of pure glee," is throwing me off. Like you wouldn't see sharks in the dark and I don't think pure glee would be a "low" noise?
