Malakai immediately moved his hand away when she flinched back, sadness evident in his eyes. "I know... I'm sorry..." he murmured, looking down shamefully.

"But we're not all bad... its my father. He makes us all miserable, not just me..." he explained, looking back up at her.

Camery just stared at him like a deer in the headlights. "You're in my room," she muttered, as though her thoughts were spilling out of her mouth. "You're from the Night Kingdom," she breathed, not taking her mind off him for even a moment. She didn't know he was a prince - she'd hardly seen their heirs, but this was bad enough as it was.

She didn't ask much more before fiddling with the latch on the door, trying to unlock it without taking her eyes off him. Her breaths became sharp and shallow for a moment, her brows pinched together as she struggled with the latch. "Are you a spy?" She hissed.

He could tell her he wouldn't hurt her, or that he loved her as much as he wanted but he'd lied. Was he trying to gain information? Lure her out? She had him to protect her from people like him, and yet he was the very same person that was trying to harm her - her whole family.

Cam just shook her head, not taking anything he was saying in. He was a spy - he'd allowed her to fall in love with him, have a relationship with him, all the while telling her he loved her in return. She didn't care if he loved her back - she was just blinded by fury right then.

She finally got the latch on the door, and opened it slowly. "You didn't promise anything," she stared at him, anger and fear coursing through her. "My boyfriend did," she snared. "My bodyguard did," she continued, her voice slowly raising louder and louder. She was furious - she'd been in so much danger this whole time. He should have been protecting her.

"You need to leave, right now," she muttered, her eyes still burning into him. She'd be going to her father - go and get help as soon as she could. Jack had been dismissed, and she didn't even know what she would do if he tried anything.

Malakai's eyes welled with tears. "No, please, baby, I love you, I'm still him, I always have been," he begged her. But Kai soon realized she wasn't going to change her mind on this one. So he lowered his head, shoulders slumping in defeat. "Yes, princess..." he whispered, taking his orders and turning around, slowly walking towards her window. Kai opened the window and stepped onto the sill. Tears streamed down his face, he couldn't bear looking back at her. So he jumped.

Kai let himself fall for a moment, truly considering letting himself fall and hit the ground, but before he could make up his mind, his wings caught the wind and he flew up and away from the castle as Camery. Away from his one true love.

Camery just stood there, watching him leave - angry, terrified, and completely heartbroken. She loved Malakai, her bodyguard. Not some sou that was sent to get close to her for information. She wouldn't be used like that, not ever.

Once he was out of sight, though, she didn't waste a moment going to her father. He needed to know. He needed to know that they'd managed to infiltrate the castle, that they did have information. God, he'd managed to get so close to her. It was terrifying.

She knocked on his door loudly, not waisting a moment on barging into her parents room and spewing everything. She was mortified. Mortified that she'd let herself get so close to him, that she'd genuinely trusted him. She felt so... used. So betrayed. Hee father, of course, was furious, but it didn't take long for him and her mother to get up and start rushing around.
Before she knew it, she was sat in the dining room, surrounded by guards and her maids, while her father was gathering everyone they knew to be allies. It all happened so fast... faster than she could have ever imagined. Her eyes started welling with tears, her whole body shaking as it hit her what had actually happened.

When Malakai made it home, he came in through the front palace doors. A maid rushed up to him, telling him he was to see the king immediately. Kai nodded absentmindedly, walking up to his fathers chambers, heartbroken and just distant.

His little brother, Duncan came running up to him once he was on the fourth floor of the palace. "Kai! Kai! You're back!" Ducan yelled, running up to him, and jumping up into Kais arms in a hug. Kai plastered on a fake smile for him. "Hey, bud," he said lowering the boy back down to the ground, kneeling to his height.

"Are you going to see daddy?" Duncan asked, his little bat wings fluttering.

Kai nodded. "Yeah, I am,"

"Can I go with you? Daddy is always so busy," Duncan asked hopefully.

"I'm sorry, bud, but I hafta have a serious conversation with him. But, hey, tomorrow we can go out flying," Kai suggested with a fake smile.

Duncan bounced up and down. "Ooh, yes! I haven't flown since you left!" Duncan squealed, as he wasn't allowed to go flying without another family member yet. He was only 9 and still learning to fly.

Kai chuckled. "Well, why don't you go get some sleep, and then we can go flying first thing in the morning,"

"Okay!" Duncan nodded. "Goodnight, I'll see you tomorrow!" he skittered back to his room with a massive grin.

Malakai watched his little brother go, a fake smile on his face until he was gone. Once the little boy was gone, his smile disappeared once again. He stood up and walked down to his fathers study, where he would surely be.

Kai found his father sitting at his desk. "Hello, father," Kai said, dipping his head to him.

"Good evening, my son," he replied. "How was your little adventure?"

"Good, sir,"

"Well, what information have you for me?"

Kai hesitated. He promised he would never hurt her, he intended on keeping that promise.

"Nothing, sir,"

"Excuse me?"

"I found nothing we don't already know,"

"You spent three months there, and found nothing?"

"That is correct, sir,"

"You're lying,"

"I do not lie, sir,"

"You are a disappointment. Guards!"

Kai didn't flinch, didn't move. He was used to this. He knew what came next.

The guards from either side of his fathers study door appeared out of the darkness, grabbing Kai by the arms and ripping his shirt off of him.

Kai didn't fight back. He knew better.

His father got up from his chair and hobbled over to behind Kai, whip in hand.

With one flick of his fathers hand, Malakai's wings were magicked away, though they would come back once his torment was over.

His fathers whip cracked down on Kais back. White pain seared through his body. Kai tensed, but did not yelp in pain. He knew his punishment would be much greater if he gave in to the torture. But he would take it.

Kai would take it if it meant keeping her safe.

He would do anything for her.

Camery sat quietly, her eyes red and her hands over her face as she at there. She felt so stupid. The one person she thought she could trust, she person the thought she knew was only there to cause her harm. He wanted to hurt her. It didn't matter if things had changed - ultimately, that was his goal. The goal of whoever he worked for.

She hated him. The way he looked at her, the way he made her light up. The way his eyes peirced into her so lovingly, so affectionately. How stupid he'd made her feel. He was comfortable saying he loved her, that he wanted to protect her, and that she believed him. He'd genuinely made her believe he loved her. That he wanted to be with her.

The idea of it all made her well up more than she would like, though just as she was about to burst she felt a warm pair of arms wrapping around her.

She looked up to see her mother, her face just as warm as ever. Her father was off doing... something. Hopefully dealing with all this. They wouldn't be attacking, that wasn't their style. They'd be working on infultrating, though. Making sure they weren't planning something after all of this. She collaped into the womans arms, her shoulders shaking as she silently sobbed.

"I thought..." she trailed off, her breath hitching as she tried to stop her sobbing.

Her mother shook her head and gave her a little squeeze, sitting back and wiping her face off.

"Babe, you did nothing wrong," she whispered, running a comforting hand up and down her back. "You're father is gonna go put things together to see what we can do," she added, flashing a soft smile.

Camery just looked at her, still on the verge of breaking down. The older woman sighed and had her sit down, calling Jack over to take her back to her room.

"Go try and rest, you look exhausted. Jack is going to be there right with you. There are guards everywhere, you'll be okay," she promised her. The woman just looked sad for her. Camery just felt so useless as of then. Though, she sighed and gave a soft nod, standing up and looking over to Jack, then her mother.

"I'm sorry," she whispered softly, hugging thr woman again before following Jack back over to her room.

Malakai's father whipped his back until Kai coughed up blood onto the floor, and then some more for dirtying the floor.

When his father was satisfied with his execution of relieving his anger, he flicked his hand again, and sloppy bandages now adorned his back to hide the bleeding along with his wings.

"You are dismissed," his father spat at him.

"Thank you, father, for the lesson," Kai bowed. He hated that he had to say that after every time his father hit him, but he knew his father would hurt him more if he didn't. He learned that when he was just a little kid.

Kai exited the study, walking stiffly back to his room. He promised no harm would ever come to his princess. He intended on keeping that promise.

Malakai went down to his old room, and yet everything from his 'home' felt distant. This wasn't his true home. She was his home.

Kai got ready for bed, slowly and carefully, as to not disturb the bandages that covered his aching wounds.

Once in bed, he just lay there, staring at the stars out his window, thinking of her. Silent tears dripped down his face. She had been so scared of him, so frightened. He loved her, he always would and she was terrified of him.

That stug, a lot.
