He sat down next to her, setting the basket down in between them to create distance so he didn't do anything stupid. The woman scoffed, rolling her eyes playfully as she looked at him. “Well, you should’ve said you didn’t want anything before I made you lug a meal for two out here,” she chuckled, a teasing grin flashing across her face. But just as quickly, the smile faded. Her hair fell gently across her shoulder, and for a moment, all she could do was pout. Something was... off about him. "You don't seem very comfortable," she mused softly, her gaze flickering over him with concern. She wrinkled her nose as she nibbled on the finger sandwiches, her head tilting slightly in thought. “At least eat a few of these, Kai. I’ll never finish them," she added with a hint of lightheartedness, hoping he might indulge her. It didn’t take long for her to stuff herself, and soon enough, she flopped back onto the grass beside him, her body sinking into the softness of the earth. Her hair tumbled over her shoulders, catching the sunlight and shimmering in the reflection of the lake, as if glowing with the warmth of the day. But as she glanced at him, something caught her off guard. For the first time in two months, he wasn’t watching her. The realization hit her, and the quiet weight of it settled in the air between them. It was the first time he hadn’t been watching her. "Have I done something?" She asked, more curious than accusing. |

Malakai Negri - Malakai just watched anything he could that wasn't her. He answered her with bland replies, concealing the emotion in his voice once again. "I'm fine," he replied simply to her first comment, "I'm not hungry," to her second, and "No, I'm fine," to her last. Kai was just thinking and thinking. What did he feel for her? Why did he feel like he wanted to kiss her? Why did he dream about her every night? Maybe it was just because his whole world right now revolved around the Princess... or maybe it was something else... |

The woman’s smile faded as she watched him retreat back into his silence, his voice stripped of emotion. She must have done something. He had just started to relax, and now it was like she’d pushed him back into that impenetrable shell he kept so tightly around himself. Her shoulders slumped slightly, the weight of the situation pressing down on her. His constant refusals stung, but more than that, she could feel the tension radiating off him. He was clearly not fine, and she didn’t know how to fix it. She sighed, stretching her arms above her head before sitting up again, her eyes drifting over to the picnic basket. She began to close it, not wanting to let the food go to waste. Maybe she could have some later or—better yet—they could pass it around the village on their way back. At least that way, it wouldn’t go to waste. Her gaze shifted back to Kai. He was just as tense as before, his body coiled tight, like he was always ready for something. She thought she had gotten him to relax a little, but something had triggered him back into his guarded state. The frustration built up inside her, and she exhaled an exasperated breath before standing and walking towards the lake. Kicking off her shoes and socks, she dipped a toe into the water, surprised to find it warm. She hummed in thought, staring at the ripples, before glancing back at her guard. He stat there, looking like he was miles away, his posture stiff and closed off. The sun bathed him in golden light, highlighting every perfect feature. She could feel the tension building in the pit of her stomach. With a quiet breath, she wandered back over to him. Crouching down, she lightly tapped his chin, urging him to look at her. When he finally met her gaze, she flashed him a mischievous grin. "Kai," she said softly, her voice playful. "The water’s warm, and it looks awfully inviting…" She let the sentence hang, her grin widening. He’d know exactly what she meant. Sometimes, a little childish fun was just what he needed. |

Malakai Negri - Kai looked up at her, his eyes widening slightly at her proposal. He wanted to, he really wanted to, especially with her. Kai's mind reeled as he thought over what the effects of this decision might be. Malakai almost said yes, he almost agreed, almost came out of his shell, but... "Not today. We need to be home before sunset. Maybe another time," he said getting up.
He almost did it, but it was 30 minutes away from sunset, and they still had to get back to the palace. And it was probably better for the both of them if they stopped pulling on this invisible string that bound them together. |

The young woman’s face lit up slightly, feeling the anticipation hanging in the air, knowing he was about to agree. She was sure of it. But then, just as quickly, a heavy weight settled in her chest. Not today? Her heart sank. She had thought he was finally starting to open up, that maybe they could actually be friends, but now… now she wasn’t so sure. A sigh escaped her lips, and she rolled her eyes, standing up to put her shoes and socks back on. For a moment, she looked up, her gaze catching the colors of the sunset reflected on the lake in front of them. The pinks and oranges were beautiful, but the quiet of the moment left her feeling hollow. As she took in the view, her skin began to tingle, and she could feel the delicate lines of her markings beginning to fade, melting away as if they never existed at all. "Yeah, whatever, let’s go," she murmured, more disheartened than she intended to sound. She shoved the picnic basket into his hands, offering a small, forced smile. "Take it home, eat whatever you want. I don’t want to waste anything," she muttered softly, trying to push the disappointment aside. When they returned to the castle, her night guard was standing outside her room as usual. She greeted him cheerfully, but her thoughts were still on Kai. She offered him a quick glance before looking back at her guard. "Goodnight, Malakai," she hummed softly, then wandered back into her room. Inside, she quickly stripped, showered, and changed into her pajamas, crawling into bed, the quiet enveloping her. But as she lay there, her mind raced. Her thoughts were consumed with him—Kai. She imagined him sitting so peacefully in the gardens earlier, his hair glistening under the moonlight. He was so... gorgeous. She suddenly snapped awake, a heavy blush creeping onto her cheeks. It was already early morning, and her maid had quietly come in, setting breakfast on the side. It was the only comfort in the moment. |

Malakai Negri - Malakai arrived back at the palace with Camery. He felt bad for rejecting her offer to go swimming in the lake, but if they went swimming, it would be cutting it really close to sunset, and Kai wasn't comfortable with that. "Goodnight, Princess," he said giving her a little bow. He knew she said he could call her Camery, but they were in front of her night guard, so he still called her Princess in front of others. Kai got back to his quarters just in time, his tattoos etching their way into his skin and his wings expanding out of his back. He sighed and got ready for bed. That night, he dreamt about her again, but this time it was different. He dreamt that they were together, in his bedroom back in the Night Kingdom palace, making out on his bed. His wings and tattoos were visible, but Camery didn't panic or seem to care at all. Instead of being frightened, she touched his wings, right where he liked it, making his body shudder as she smiled. Kai woke the next morning and shook off the dream, ashamed his mind put together such a disgustingly amazing moment. He knew that would never happen. Malakai's wings and tattoos slowly vanished into their black smoke as the sun rose. After they were gone, he proceeded to get up and get ready for the day. Kai made his way up to Camery's room, nodding to the night guard, dismissing him, before entering Camery's room, taking his post just next to her door. "Good morning, Princess," |

"You can't just say you don't mind or that it's up to me. You have to pick something," she teased, her words laced with a gentle insistence.
