Last Thanksgiving our 6y/o dog got sick and by January we had to put her down, it was so sad... Turns out a student left a TOWEL inside during spay 5 years prior and she developed so many tumors (non-cancerous) from it... It was a nightmare.

I had wanted to put her down at least two weeks prior. :'(
Historically, when it comes to calling quits on an animal it has somehow been forced on me to make the decision. I said "No, I am absolutely NOT making the call this time, I am sick of it." The sister that administered the wormer refused to even acknowledge the cat was dying or even existed and my dad had told she and I that it was our responsibility. I kept telling them to put her down but they refused until my dad finally steped in and told the he agreed. It was a mess and it was terrible to watch her be so obviously close to death for days on end. I certainly wasn't allowed to do it myself. Then I dug her grave along. My dad came down and we laid her to rest. I was very disappointed in my family during that...

Don't know that she had heartworm. We didn't have her long enough to really check anything out and we didn't realize she was so sick until near the end. I carried her out to the swales while she was having a seizure, and my dad shot her at close range. She died instantly and her body relaxed, which was a good thing to see, but so sad.

Perhaps the poor girl wasn't an outlier where she came from, but not all Amish communities are the same. I am not defending them, I hope you know. I greatly dislike how they treat their animals and horses. It is heartbreaking and deplorable.
