Silver, I have no problem doing that. I spend money on every game I play. :)

I'm new too. Seems to me that they're suggesting you get the money to start your own line from showing other people's geldings. Then once you're established, go on a capture spree and build up your own line there.

To breed a good horse from captures you have to be very experienced with matching, you must know what horse won't benefit you, and you must be prepared to wait years before you get an EEE. And, when you get that EEE, it isn't going to be strong and it'll likely throw a foal with a PPP or lower rating.
If you worry about starting from scratch, why don't you go to the horse search and buy horses that are wild lined? That way you can be sure that the rating is good. That way you aren't wasting your ebs and real life money and you still aren't "picking up where someone left off". You can also enter into the "Wild EEE Raffle" on the News page and possibly get an unbred wild EEE mare.

I think what everyone is trying to tell you is how most of us that don't have all that disposable income play the game. We're not so fast jumping into breeding. It's really a side-light to the main game. The money machine here is to show, show, show in order to make game money. Since geldings train up faster, most people have lots of them to earn lots of show prizes to build their money to be able to afford to capture/buy good stock or breedings to leaderboard horses. You might not need that if you're planning on wearing out the Money Fairy. Whatever floats your boat.
How did the original horse lines get started? Hm, let's see. I was around in the early days. There were fewer levels of ratings. At first, just Sub-Par, Average and Superb. Then as people bred a lot of SSS horses and ran out of challenges, we got Premium as a new rating (that didn't take long, less than 20 "years"). Then when people bred a lot of PPP horses, we got Elite. So it was a gradual increase in the quality of bred horses that elevated them past the wild ones. People culled out lots of lower-rated captures and bred horses and bred the best to the best until they have a much better chance of breeding an EEE than one has for capturing one. The game's been here for 10 real-life years, so that's a long time and things change.

Firstlight, after I test all my stallions, if they're not the best quality, I'll definitely geld them for showing. :)
GreysAnatomy, hmm, that paints a pretty bleak picture, as though trying to create a decent herd is such an uphill battle that people shouldn't even bother to try. :( Are the only horses 'worthy' of having in the game straight E horses? I will definitely look into buying wild caught horses from other players, thanks for that advice!
Almost Heaven, thanks for the response! I plan to test all the horses I have atm and the stallions that aren't all that great will definitely be gelded and used for showing.
While getting 'E', or at least very good horses is definitely a goal and something I'm after down the road, I'm really more interested in breeding good horses for their colors, so basically I'd like to become a color breeder for fun, just for my own personal pleasure. :) Edited at July 30, 2019 04:47 AM by Nightfall Meadows

Before you free all those SPAs, decide what you're gonna breed for. if you breed for ratings, free them immediately. if you're going for color, then first check their rarity. Bravery, they should have P+ bravery to be worth keeping. personally, i think ratings are the best way to go, but then I'm biased. PM me for more clarity!

First Light. If I was you I would not get an upgrade for a while. Free stables compete against each other and not against the Premium players. The competition is less fierce and it is easier to make money competing. I have found that for a small stable the best thing to do is stay free and show all of your horses, mares, stallions and geldings as often as you can (3 times a week). You will soon build up money that way.

This is your game to play,How is anyone able to tell you how to do it?All we can do is give advice for you to ignore or take on board! Sounds as though you have an aim,And to be fair colour captures aren't too bad an indulgence!I'd just do your research in the game guide on colour genes and patterns,For example Arabs cant be captured with Tobiano. I have to agree with the suggestions of gelding armies,Most of us do need an Ebs income without throwing money into the game. But if you are prepared to put money in,then at the end of the day its more for Eve to donate to charity :D But yes,Welcome to the game,And I wish you all the best with whatever path you take!
