Okay, so with a lot of thinking, I decided to permanently be a KNN Breeder alongside my TBs.
But because IÂ’ve always just bred TB, I know very little about the KNN Breed world on here, lol. So any advise is much appreciated.

I plan on breeding for rating, but color as well as rating would be a bonus for me. :)

Thank you heaps!!

I did KNNs briefly when I was here years ago. It turned out to be too frustrating for me, but for someone who likes a challenge I can see it being rewarding. The problem you have breeding KNN for ratings is that you can breed 2 primo KNN together and still get a SH foal. It's all in the genetics.

Fillies only have to inherit Lp to be KNN. They don't have to have a pattern or "look" appaloosa. But a colt has to have both Lp *and* at least one PATN gene or he's a sport horse, lost to your KNN breeding program forever because you can't breed KNN from him even though both parents were purebred KNN.

So genetic testing for ALL breeding stock is absolutely essential. If you get an EEE that's Lplp and with only one PATN out of the possible 4 you're playing with fire breeding that horse for KNN's. Unless you're pairing it with LpLp and one homozygous PATN you've got a good chance to get a really stellar SH colt or filly or a KNN filly with only the Lp gene.

I ended up just making the KNN's a side project and having my main breeding program SH so I could at least use the good non-KNN foals I got while taking chances on iffy KNN pairings toward the goal of raising ratings.

I'm sure someone currently in the KNN pipeline can be more helpful with info about pricing broods/studs and where the ratings in the breed lie ATM. Last time I bred them we didn't have the E rating yet. :)

Your KNN stud is LpLp PATN-1patn-1 PATN-2patn-2. That means all his offspring will be Lp, so all fillies will be KNN. However, he needs a mare with either PATN-1PATN-1 or PATN-2PATN-2 to ensure a KNN colt. If you breed him with a PATN-1patn-1 patn-2patn-2 or a patn-1patn-1 PATN-2patn-2 or even another PATN-1patn-1PATN-2patn-2 you could have a really nicely-rated SH colt. He'll have at least one Lp gene, so will be labeled appaloosa, but no pattern at all.

I love KNN but if you don't have a "good mare" and you plan on using broods, expect a high price. I have yet to spend less than 500k for an eee KNN brood.

I spent 1.3 million on a promising EEE KNN mare to buy. I've had 5 planned KNN matches, worst I've got was a PPS From a LBKNN eee mare and a LBKNN eee freshman with a sven. I've got one eee and three PEP combos and a single EPE from a random match this season.

Luckily the stallions are actually quite affordable to breed to so I really suggest using the top boys whenever possible

As much as IÂ’d like to breed to the top Mares, it wonÂ’t be for a while lol. For now IÂ’m just using a couple PEP Mares and I just bought an EEP Mare. My EEE KNN stud also just threw me an EEP Filly too thatÂ’ll be used in the future.
But IÂ’ll definitely keep all of your advise in mind. <3
