Try adding more hairs instead of huge clumps like the mane, use smaller brushes but only make them big enough so you can see them like me and oak have done ^^

Sunset, this was super helpful! I had to kinda mix it up, but I found that by using the gaussian blur and smudge tools, I was able to get something good.
