I have mostly focused on showing and rating breeding. but I have a 2 year old stallion I'm thinking of using as my first color breeding stud as well as a couple of girls I think r really pretty. What are some things I should focus on in color breeding to get started? Some thoughts I had were breeding for color rarity or just over pretty horses, but what are yall's thoughts?
please note that I am only using captured and home-bred horses.
Possible CB stud:

I don't know if anyone can really give you advice on what to do for color breeding because it really comes down to personal preference. There's no right or wrong way to go about it, and there's no leaderboard to say someone is a "top" color breeder.

I made the choice to breed for color only if the ratings made it worthwile. Otherwise I would just have a bunch of low rated horses that were fun to look at, and I prefer my horses to make money (showing-, breeding-, selling-wise).

What are your goals with the stud you shared? I see he's homozygous dun and he's nice to look at, but he doesn't exactly have color rarity or great ratings. You might get some pretty-to-look-at babies but they won't have color rarity unless the mares are color bombs to make up for it, and they won't have good enough ratings to be sellable.

If you just want to have fun putting two horses together to see what comes out, then go for it. Some people like to challenge themselves by setting goals of specific genetic/breed combos. My only advice is that if you can add in higher ratings while breeding for color, you'll be a lot better off. Otherwise you'll have to just have to accept it as a fun money sink.

Thank you. I think Im going to start with experimenting and having fun with it. I found some gene breeding guides for references.

I will play around with color breeding for fun sometimes. I just look for horses with the longest color names and cross them.

Your stud had only one color gene - DD - and not any other patterns. This would make him a hard starter boy.
Before you start, just make up your mind and check, wwhat you want to breed for - color wise:
  • any rating or maybe just SSS+ or PPP+? Unless you go for WEE or higher, the rating would not affect a possible sale price for your foals. If you want to show your stock, ratings from SSS+ would make quite decent show horses, too.
  • Which breed do you want to focus on? The most patterns you can aquire in SH, ISH and PON.
  • Do you want to breed for "as low as possible" color rarity?
  • Or for horses with "as long as possible" color names?
  • Or for horses with as many homozygous patterns as possible?
  • Or for horses with just one certain color, but that are quite rare in their breed? Like Dun TBs for example.
  • Or do you want to start off with colorful subPar horses and try to breed them up to E+ ratings?
You see that you can make many decisions if you want to - or just start and jump on the color train ;)
There is a quite old guide on color breeding, if you did not read it by now:
I just checked the horse sales and for example this filly could be a great starter mare for ISH color breeding for long names and low rarity
