This is kind of a rant.
Im a ballet dancer - I do pointe, and I have been dancing for around 14 years. Back in February, I injured my foot, and I fractured my sesmoid bone. Since then, Ive been in and out of a boot, Ive been in a cast and on crutches, and Ive been to physical therapy all in hopes of avoiding surgery. It never really went away with all of these. Now, its gotten worse and its hurting again, and it feels like when it first happened. Its been almost 9 months now and Ive gotten nowhere. I havent been able to dance since February. To make it worse, my first doctor told me it would take 2 weeks to heal. Since then Ive seen 3 different doctors.
Its frustrating, because I feel like I cant do anything. Dance was a HUGE part of me and now its looking more and more like I wont dance again. Surgery is the only option left and its a guarunteed career ender. One of my main hobbies is doing tech for theater, and I cant do that right now because even standing on it is too painful. I feel like Ive just gotten bad news after bad news and Im tired of it. I just want to dance again.

I have seen on TV dancers that has been in rather nasty accidents with following surgeries and allthough they have had a long road back with training and recovery they still blow people away with their dancing.
Surgery might end your dance career yes but you dont know that before you have had it and healed. What is certain is that if you dont get your foot fixed and it does not heal properly THAT will mess up your chances of ever dancing again.

I agree with Artic, and I used to dance. Surgery may or may not end your dancing career. You won't know for sure until it happens, you heal, and do PT during your recovery. I used to ballet dance, never got to pointe, but I was good at ballet dancing until I snapped my ankle in a gopher hole while jogging. I can still ballet dance a little bit after snapping my ankle years ago, but I made the choice to stop due to the ankle injury and after breaking my neck in a riding accident. But the good news I can still ballroom dance as long as it's a waltz.

I agree with Arctic as well. You can't know for sure if you will never dance again after surgery. It is possible and I have heard of many people recovering from bad injuries. I think that you should have hope and perseverance. Don't give up on yourself! You might be able to dance again!
