Why Do People Have To Be Judgemental About Tattoos? May 1, 2023 03:47 PM

A few days ago (April 27th) I was playing cards with some friends, and one showed me her tattoo in memoriam of her daugher who passed away. I said it's a beautiful tattoo, and I'm saving up to get a full sleeve tattoo.

Another friend said why the heck would you want to tattoo yourself. You shouldn't do that to your body, and even the bible says you shouldn't do that. My reply was simple, I'm paying honor to my Native American heiritage. She asked me if I knew what tribe I was from. I honestly don't know, since I never done an indept DNA test. I only know I have Native blood due to what family has told me.

When I said that to her, she said well why don't you use that money to get a DNA to really know. Then she said I guess it would work if you worked on a reservation. I told her I have worked on a reservation as a teenager and if I remembered correctly it was a Cheerokee reservation, but when you're talking 30 some odd years ago.... well memory isn't always accurate.

She's damn lucky I was polite and didn't blow up at her. March 12 thru April 30 is a hard time for me because something bad always happens to me in that time frame, family, friends, pets pass on, or something just really bad happens to me like this year someone cut me off on April 29th, and I clipped their rear passenger side panel. Good news with that no one was hurt, and the cars weren't that damaged.

But yeah back to the point. She's lucky I didn't call her a judgemental bitch who is overly religious. I get a lot of older folks are heavy into their religion. And these gals are very Christian and keep trying to get me to go to their churchs. I'm always polite and say I only go twice a year, due to being forced into religion as a child, and when I was old enough I started studying other religions, and I have friends of all religions. But this one lady was damn lucky I didn't tell her my view point on Christian religions. I probably would have had the entire group in the ICU for mutlipul heart attacks, but I followed my manners and bit my tounge to keep from getting the others as pissed off as I was.

Thanks for reading my ramblings. If you read this far virtual pat on the back and a handshake.

"The Bible doesn't say you should..." well, not everyone follows those guidelines. I wish everyone was capable of grasping that concept :/ I'd never get a tattoo because needles ouch but I think they're neat!

i think tattoos are awesome. ive been thinking about getting a tattoo myself, im indigenous puerto rican and would like it to be cultural of some sort (but not something tacky with feathers lol). if you think you could be native, i suggest trying to trace family lines to find out what tribe!

I know it's one of the tribes that was indigionus to either Kansas, Iowa, or Arizona. My biological grandfather was born in Iowa, but I don't know anything about his parents or grand parents, but I know they lived in Kansas, Iowa, and Arizona. All I really know about the issue is I think it was great great grandpa had an affair with a Native woman, and he took the child and raised it as his own with his white wife due to them not being able to have kids, but beyond that my mother really didn't know much more than that. Since she passed I can't ask for more information on my biological father's side of the family. I only met the man once (biological father, and he was more interested in taking off with my biological mother than getting to know me, leaving me with his mother, while they took off), and lost touch with his mother (Who I met the same night as I met my biological father) and sister. I found out his mother died in 2014, and his sister died (Who I actually found while looking for my great uncle) died in 2019 in the first wave of Covid-19 deaths in May of that year.

The tattoo I'm planning is of my totems/Spirit guides on one arm, and then portaits of my cats from life with their birthdays and passings under their portait on the other arm. I have three guides that are always with me, and I have a few that come and go depending what's going on in my life at the time. So I plan on having the main 3 take up the majority of the space, with the few that come and go in the surrounding and backgrounds of the main tattoo. As I stated it'll be about 3k, but worth it if it turns out the way I want it to for the totem. It'll probably be 1.5k for the cat portaits on the other arm.

With the bible it's open to inturpertation for a few things. And a lot of people take it to the extrems which is what this gal does. I almost told her "Judge ye not least ye be judged". I try to keep an open mind on everything when it comes to religions and religious texts. But I don't go around quoting those books.

That's why I am saving up to get my tatto, and well I have 5 cats that love to claw me up at times, so from what my roommate said getting a tattoo is like my cat scratching me lol. I love a good detailed tattoo, and I have lots of friends who have them.

People being hating on tattoos has always been so weird to me lol. I know a lot of christians are lovely, but just as many of them are so awful trying to push their way of life on others
.
On a diffferent note though, DNA tests are rarely accurate for native americans. I know somebody whos full cherokee and did a DNA test just for shits and giggles and it came back saying they were south american native LOL
Tracing it back by hand and then going through tribal rolls would probably be your best bet. It can be tough because records are bad especially for native people, and some tribes have been invalidated by the government, but its all super worth it in the end :)
Also for tattoos, id wait until you know for sure what your tribe is and connect with the culture n history of that tribe before getting a tattoo
Because if you get the wrong one, and then 3 months later find out its a different tribe, you'll look really silly. Or you get a tattoo that for specific members of the tribe, and you arent part of that you'll either look silly, super white, or come across as disrespectful.
.
But all that being said, I wish you the best of luck finding out what tribe you're from :)
It is such an awesome feeling when you finally find out where you belong. Im still trying to figure out my moms side (my dad is Kahnawake) my best guess right now is Chumash and othertribes in that area but seeing as she was killed and records erased, its been tough work lol.
