I worked with a breeder. It was 50/50 chance on the bitey phase of each foal. But this breeder ended the nonsense quick. She taught me to treat them like an adult the moment they are born. Her horses were, and still are, amazing. If he only she had not become crazy I would still be working with her.
Oh yeah. This geldings previous owner even said he liked childrenÂ…. She left out the eating part. He likes eating children Also only a good childrenÂ’s mount if the child knows what they are doing.
Yeah I hate the random bites that you cannot pinpoint 🤪 And sometimes even trying to establish boundaries does not work. Our adult show horse that bites is random too.
Mares and fillies do too. Our two year old was bad right now. A baby will be a baby no matter the gender. I honestly cannot say what gender is more likely to go through a mouthy/bitey phase. Been around a lot of babies and honestly it has been pretty close to 50/50
We have a horse at the barn who is a phenomenal ADULT show horse who bites. He never was taught ground manners such as standing still, how to respect his handler etc. in the saddle he is a darling, on the ground he is a monster. He was only taught to win everything else was ignored
They all go through a bitey phase when they are young. Testing boundaries. I try to figure out why they are biting, are they bored etc. but more recently I have resorted to a good pop with the lead rope in the nose. Shocked her the first time, has not tried it again for awhile now. Definitely do not want her biting me during halter, they are looking for behavior
And then I could qualify for master showman like I did last year and have to do sheep, goats, chickens, beef, rabbits, and dairy all in one hour with a horse show probably overlapping. I will be having to scratch a few shows
Yeah 😢 my last show was just my little getting my feet wet, I did two classes. Now coach wants me to expand on classes and do more. Should be fun though.
