After riding him, I've decided to go with Roman. It seems the most fitting, but I appreciate all the input! <3 I've put two rides on him and he's been great considering how long he's been sitting - no buck/bolt/kick/spook/rear - nada. He was super antsy when I mounted and my trainer had to hold him still for me. He's a little dead to the leg but that was quickly fixed with a riding crop lol, he seemed to be familiar with what it was. We went through all gaits - walk, trot and canter. He is very TB in that he only picks up one lead (his left) lol, so that will be a work in progress. We did manage to get the right lead going to the right so after a few circles I gave him lots of rubs and walked him out.
Ride #2 - Lunged him both ways at walk/trot just so I could see how he moves from the ground. Then I led him out to the mounting block, walked him up alongside of it and worked on him standing while I stepped up, messed with him, stepped down. Tacked up and went back into the round pen. We did some walk/trot and circles, but he seemed super ouchy in there (I'm wondering if it is just due to the super hard ground) so we went out into the big arena (which I was a bit leery about because of how open it is) to see if he was still ouchy and he wasn't. We only did walk/trot and lots of circles both ways at the trot to work on bending. He's kinda awkward and wants to just fall over haha, but he did good. Walked him out, dismounted at the mounting block (where he stood still!!) and then untacked, brushed, messed with his lip for 30 minutes to try to read his tattoo and turned out in the big pasture. <3

What a handsome horse! And if he has a racing tattoo, I'm sure you can find him documented somewhere. I know it's required for TBs, but I'm not sure about Stanardbreds, Quarter Horses, etc. Whether not you can find his history, I'm glad you enjoy him!

TBs, Standardbreds, Arabians, Appaloosas, and QHs are the typical breeds seen with lip tattoos. It is required before a horse runs their first race, I believe, so any of the common racing breeds. Apparently there is also a type of selle francais that is used for racing and will sport a lip tattoo.

Some Tennessee Walkers and Saddlebreds have lip tattoos now as well. The name Roman seems to suit him. From the pictures I've seen def. Quarter Horse in him. But with his head I'm thinking a Tennessee Walker. If you can afford to do it you could do a gentic test to see what he is, but as long as he's a good horse and you're happy with him does it really matter what he is?
