I’ve been watching the show Free Rein since it came out. I’ve barely been through the 3rd season now and I’m picking up all the mistakes. And it isn’t just with this show! It’s almost all of them, including the movies(minus the heartland series because that seems to be the one that hits closest to the actual truth about horses in its events they create for the show). Some of these mistakes are huge, for the foal that Ariel had in season 3 of heartland, it looks at least a month old rather than newborn! Not to mention, if it were a newborn at that size, it would have had its legs grown in toward each other because it would have been too big for the mare. Another: Ravens a stallion? And apparently Zoe’s mom had a background with horses and continued to let her child ride a stallion(I personally have no problems with stallions given I ride them but I’ve ridden before) which I myself think is highly irresponsible because who lets their 14 year old daughter ride a stallion when she’s never ridden before? Not to mention, a borderline insane stallion who could actually kill you in a matter of seconds if he wanted to.

Honestly, now this is just me, but it seems like some of us on HEE should take over for some of these shows. Thoughts? Please nothing rude as this is just an output because I watch these movies and shows a lot hoping I find something different but it’s all just the same thing over and over again, almost like hallmark but with horses.

I honestly don't think producers would be able to get a newborn foal for a show 🤷‍♀️

Most people wont let a camera crew anywhere close to a newborn. Plus, if the grown horse they're using for the film isn't the foal's actual mom, it's better to have one a little older. The horse would probably hurt the baby if it was tiny and couldn't get out of the way. Though I will say, it really annoys me how there's all these shows and movies of "this horse is dangerous and might kill someone" "I know. I still want to ride it. I've never ridden a horse before" "Ok. Have fun. Things will turn out perfect." It's so annoying and unrealistic.

If you haven't seen it, I do recommend the movie Nico the Unicorn. Slightly more realistic with how the boy obtains the horse and takes care of her until she has the unicorn foal. Very nice movie. I watched it around 8 years ago and loved it.

Yeah getting ahold of a newborn foal is probably highly difficult. But with that foal, I’d dare say a mini with a cut mane and tail might do better lol.

I do think I’ve watched Nico and The Unicorn and didn’t quite enjoy it that much, I think it was partially because I wasn’t paying attention lol

I think most modern TV series are geared toward people who have little actual knowledge of the subject matter and are easily sucked into artificially-created drama. Truthfully, they are prime-time soap operas for people who are fascinated by somewhat-esoteric professions or living situations like owning/riding horses or being a doctor/nurse/detective.

I stayed with my sister for a couple months this winter while I bought my house and sat through hours and hours of medical "dramas" that my brother-in-law was glued to and my sister and I sat there rolling our eyes. And he got really, really angry if we talked about how ridiculous some of the plot lines were, how they would never, ever happen IRL. He would say, "Shut up, it's a TV show and I watch it to be entertained, not to pick it apart and disbelieve it." The problem with that is some people get most of their horse/medical/legal "knowledge" from these shows. They take it all in and believe every second. I'm not against a good fantasy, but to couch it as "real life" is dumbing down our society.

I personally think free rein is amazing. It's so completely off the wall, out of the ballpark wrong that you just have to sit back and laugh. Its the more serious shows like Heartland that annoy me when they get it wrong, because it's not coming off as comedy, so people are more likely to think it's based off truth.

I've never seen a film with realistic anything lol.At the end of the day its all made up,the people directing probably dont look into these tiny details as us who know horses would do.They're there to create drama, and make money,so those details mean little to most people x3
But yeah,I agree a lot of horse based things are annoyingly unrealistic - but it is a matter of opinion. Not a massive deal if its interesting to watch xD

Yes it's all about money, but there are kids out there who now think that they can get on any horse wild or tame, and just forage a bond with it. It's a load of BS and it's only a matter of time before a little kid gets severely hurt trying to be like a fake equestrian on a TV show. My niece almost got thrown off into a fence because she though she out just get on my Miniature mare, who is very untrusting of anyone she doesn't see regularly which would be someone like my niece. Like I said; people are gonna start getting hurt if these shows don't know what they're talking about and don't stop worrying about the money.

Yes I know that people stopping worrying about money is highly unlikely and it's how people make a living, but I don't think that money is more important than the safety of a little kid.

Yeah I mean some of these shows are hilarious but there’s a limit, and sometimes they go beyond those limits.

Whispering Valley I too believe that safety should be valued more than money. No matter the age of the rider. And if somebody older than like 13 actually wanted a horse and could get an unbroke horse for cheap, I think they should go for it, but there’s still people out there who are more knowledgeable in training a horse than a 13 year old who’s taken lessons for maybe 4 years is, which in that case, ask for help or hire help.

Although some children and people are easily influenced,I can't see things like this happening. And if they did,They learn straight away to respect and be cautious around horses and ponies alike whatever background. And on the contrary, however unrealistic they are as money grabs,They are what give so many children the love of horses and riding at the very beginning,if they dream of breaking a horse at some point,Then it's up to the parents to stop them jumping on anything and starting their equine career off properly.
At the end of the day, directors and tv makers won't put public safety above money,So people have to take things like this with a pinch of salt. But i think we should all be thankful they bother with horse based programs, because when I was a child there was at maximum 1 programs at any one time. They could just do more teenage vampire rubbish lol xD
