Okay I really need some help...I'm riding this gelding named Big Boy for a movie that we have to film for school and he belongs to my friend. Well today we noticed that he just likes to follow people around when I am riding him and won't stop when you tell him to. It's becoming a big problem and the last day we have to film is tomorrow. On top of that I fell off today because he was following my other friend up the trail at a trot and stopped suddenly. Any tips?

Edit: Do you guys have any tips on Bonding with him? And gaining some trust?

A horse will disobey orders if they sense that the rider is not fully confident. Act like you're in charge. If he doesn't stop when you tell him to, dismount and make him stand in front of you facing you and strictly tell him to halt. If he keeps being bossy after that, do it again.

If he stops, you'll have to re-teach him not to.

I would have someone walk across the arena and when they start turn him away and go another direction and if he starts to follow do anything you can to make him turn or halt. Have some faith in him if your telling yourself he's going to follow he's going to follow. Belive that he will listen. Trust him.

Ok I will put more confidence in myself I'm not used to riding bare back (which I forgot to mention)

If your riding bare back, do NOT pinch with your knees to grip, horses really hate that.

Please dont do this.

I'm assuming you're just starting your horse journey and with the wrong horse - ESPECIALLY if he wants to show you he is dominant - this can go very bad...they can do some spectacular things with their front legs and you might not have the skills to deal with that or expect it.

Try one rein stops; however, since it's your friends horse maybe ask her instead :) hope it goes better

I'm not an expert rider but I have a been riding since I was 9 and am just not that used to bare back. I thank it was because I was nervous and he hadn't been rode for a couple months. We are going to try and find his saddle and see how it goes. Thanks for the help

Have you trying doing work alone with him?I know of alot of school ponies that get so used to just being led around on foot whilst the rider sits Doing nothing - Therefore leading him to believe the person on foot is in charge and he just has to do what they say- regardless of the rider.
I would refind his saddle and do some lunging in a school or similar area to regularity your vocal cues - Then mount and do some simple cues when he begins to listen.
NEVER do this fully alone if you're not comfortable and don't find the confidence in him quite yet.Have someone stood at the side line or in the arena with you , for guidance or assistance if things go wrong.
Youll get there - it sounds like he's just plodding along in his 'I know best' manner and could do with a wake up Lol!
Good Luck with the film too! :D

(Wrong Account - This is Flippur on side ^.^)
