Hazel - 15.1HH 9 year old chestnut thoroughbred mare
We got Hazel in the summer of 2019 from a neglect case. She was only supposed to be a foster, but we fell in love with her sweet nature.
She did race from age 2-5 and actually had quite the successful career. However after her retirement, she was off the raider for 4 years, before turning up at the neglectful home she was rescued from.
When she arrived, she had scratches deep in her neck from reaching through a barbed wire fence to eat, and was very skinny. She was nervous, and had separation anxiety from the 2 other ponies she came with. She also had horrible feet, way too long and they were cracking pretty bad.
Now, she is a well muscled, has thickened out well. She no longer has separation anxiety, her feet are back to normal and overall is a very healthy happy horse.
We started her under saddle again (unsure if she was trained after being on the track), and she has been really, really well behaved. She will be a companion and pleasure horse with us for the rest of her life.
Ariel - 14.3HH 25 year old bay QH Cross mare
We received Ariel in August of 2019, after a rehoming situation went wrong. Ariel’s past owned passed away, and the mans wife couldn’t care for her, especially since she has a very bad case of Heaves.
Ariel has been an all around horse, from a hunter jumper, to western pleasure and trail horse. She has done it all in her younger days.
When she arrived, she actually seemed very healthy, and we struggled to belive the severity of her heaves. Yet, as the colder months set it, we truly saw how bad her condition was.
Now, she is fully retired, and we are working on a strong treatment plan for her heaves. She is on steroid, puffers and a few other things I cannot list off the top of my head.
She can get grumpy, especially when her heavens are partially bad, however she has a sweet nature, and it’s nothing uncontrollable.
Bianca - 14.3HH 18 year old grey QH mare
Bianca, or as we call her, Bee arrived in late May of 2019. She was actually rescued right from the kill pen, by another rescue, along with her son Archie. Bee is completely blind, and uses Archie to help her navigate, somewhat. This rescue could not house them together and separated them. This gave Bee very high stress as she was alone. The rescue reached out to us, and we adopted them and reunited them. Ever since she has shown no signs of any stress.
Bee, when she had sight was used as a lesson horse for a long time. By an owner, who did not care much for his horses. She had a bad infection in her one eye, and he left it untreated which caused her to go blind. (Not confirmed just what we were told from the other rescue) She is now fully retired, and strictly a companion mare.
Archie - 15HH 14 year old grey appendix QH cross gelding
Archie, has the same story as his mother Bianca. He was rescued out of the kill pen, though he has full sight, and reunited with his mother when we brought them to our barn.
We don’t know a lot about their past, but they have never seemed to have a very good home. From what we have gathered, he was broke by the man who originally owned and bred him and Bianca. He was deemed “too dangerous” to be ridden, by this man, and has not been touched since.
We don’t plan to train him undersaddle, but we have been working with basic manners with him. He now stands for the farrier, stands politely tied, and overall is now well mannered.
Cyrus - 15.2 HH 12 year old bay QH Cross gelding
Cyrus came to us as a 4 year old, skinny, sickly colt. When we first got him he was quite the challenge, very trusting but very, very sneaky and mischievous.
He was found, tied to a plow in the middle of a field, without food or water in the middle of the summer. He was extremely dehydrated, had horrible feet and was skin and bones.
We fattened him up, and started him undersaddle. He proved to be very challenging, but eventually he was very quiet. He is the perfect little horse now, very well behaved and overall just a complete teddy bear. He’s very willing to please, and will do just about anything if he trusts you. He enjoys only a few riders, ones with soft hands and those he has known for a while. For this reason he is simply a trail horse, and a companion to those who first come in as he is very friendly. This boy was our first ever rescue, he’s what started it all!
Elinka - 17.2HH 6 year old dark bay hanoverian mare
Elinka came to us in the spring of 2018. She was training to be a top show jumper, and at the age of 4 was jumping 1m20 but had never shown. They discovered her to have wobblers syndrome, and that she shouldn’t even be ridden, none the less jumped. They planned to put her down, until my boss found her ad on Facebook, and decided to save her.
She arrived here, and we found she has very mild wobblers, it’s hard to tell at all, as she’ll still run and buck around freely in the field, however we noticed over the year and a bit we’ve gotten her, it’s easier to tell. This makes us suspect it will get worse as she ages.
Unlike all of the other horses we’ve rescued, Elinka came to us in absolutely perfect condition. Her mane was plated nicely, she obviously had a bath before she came, and overall looked like she just popped out from a magazine.
She fit into the herd very, very nicely and was one of the only cases who arrived here, looking nothing less then picture perfect.
Eclair - 17HH 28 year old bay thoroughbred mare
Eclair arrived to us in January of 2017, with another horse called George. The two were inseparable, despite coming from two completely different cases. Eclair was on the track, and badly abused and neglected. She has nerve damage in her back, so she’s unable to be ridden.
George on the other hand was from a neglect case, being left out in a pasture after he was unable to be ridden due to soundness issues.
The two met in foster care, and took companionship in one another. We adopted them both, as no other home was willing to care for two, very skinny, sickly horses.
This past year, George passed away, from a heart attack due to fireworks. Eclair took his death hard, and didn’t eat for nearly a week, before we started to get some food into her.
She is now doing much better, and is going to be a companion for others for the rest of her life.
Jewel - 15HH 22 year old chestnut QH Cross mare
Jewel was one of our first ever rescue horses, coming in with Cyrus in 2012, though they came from different places. We got her, from an abandoned property, where her previous owners left her to starve. She was older when we got her, and developed arthritis.
It had taken us 2 whole years for her to let us pet her, without having a halter attached, so we suspected she had been handled poorly, if at all in the past. She is now a very friendly mare, one of the firsts to greet you at the gate now. She still is very bad with her feet, even though we are working on it, and has to be sedated to get her feet done. She has a horribly swayed back, so she isn’t able to be ridden, along with her arthritis, so she is strictly a companion.
Pearl - 15.1HH 28 year old brown QH mare
Pearl is the only horse in the whole barn who isnt a rescue. She is a retired lesson, brood mare and barrel racer. She has done it all in her day, but is now enjoying retirement at our farm, being a companion for other rescues. She will be with us for the rest of her life and is one of the sweetest mares ever!
Mee Maw - 15.2HH 24 year old chestnut Trakehner mare [WIP]
We recently got MeeMaw (or mommas as we call her) from a neglect case. She came to us having never gotten her feet or teeth done, at 24 years old. She has very bad arthritis and is extremely skinny. Since she arrived in early December we have gotten her teeth done, put on a fair bit of weight, and her hooves trimmed. She is an absolute sweet mare, who is so willing. She is unlike many neglected horses, and is the friendliest, most sweet mare ever. She is such a character and has much more of a “gelding personality”. She will be with us for the rest of her life, as we recently adopted her.
Marley - 15HH 24 year old bay QH trakehner Cross mare
Marely arrived as a companion to MeeMaw, and was not in as near as bad of shape. We had her teeth and feet done, however, she was not nearly as skinny as her friend. She has a very bad swayed back, and is conformationally very incorrect (cow hocked, swayed back, pigoned toed, etc.) She has bad arthritis. She tends to be much more stand off ish, but we are working on it. She is hard to catch, and has the opposite personality of MeeMaw. Either way, she has captured our hearts and she is now a forever part of our herd.
